E xplaining the present trend white
producers and w riters are try in g to
develop. Organ says there is an at

H e says m ost
television series which featured Black
characters, rarely associate w ith any
B la ck fo lk s . He says th e m a in
character never has any Black friends
or fam ily ever seen by the television
viewer.
“ I fin d the m ain character, who
happens to be Black in a television
series that doesn’ t have any Black
associates is a little strange. L e t’ s
lace it. We associate w ith each other
and do have Black friends regardless
o f our professional status in society.
B la ck a c to rs w a n t to have B la ck
shows instead o f shows w ith one or
tw o Blacks in it. I th in k one o f the
best program s on TV today is " d i f
ferent S troke s.” Those kids in the
p ro g ra m a lw a y s re fe r back to
H arletn, and talk about their Black
frie n d s and fa m ily . T hey never let
th e ir past slip by them . They keep
their Black id e n tity all the tim e .”
A c to r O rgan says com edy is his
lin e o f w o rk . But he says not a ll
Blacks should be com ic according to
stereotypes.
“ Some o f the series on television
are horrible. Some o f the w ritin g as
well as the acting is ridiculous. Not
all Black people are fun ny. I f you are
in comedy and you are not fu n n y,
you w o n’ t get any w o rk. Let me tell
you, there are alot o f people in the
wrong lie ld out there w ho happen to
be Black and they aren’ t funny. You
have got to have tim in g . As a
comedian you can’ t be a fra id to act
w ild and g o o fy any where; th a t’ s
what it ’ s all a b o u t.”
A cting, listening and reacting are
the three tools Organ says all actors
and actresses must have. He says a
good agent and m anager w ill help
w ith the bookings and criticism . But
he says w o rk , experience and p a t
ience w ill help him benefit the most.
“ This is a very com petitive field.
You have to be good in your craft
and keep yo u rs e lf together. There
are hundreds o f Black actors and ac
tresses out there who are excellent in
the ir profession. The m ovie industry
tries to lead the pu blic in to thin kin g
there aren’ t enough Black actors for
open roles. But th a t’ s not the case,
we never get the p u b lic ity n o r thè
credit we should get.”
