I he Black I Jucational Center (BEC)
are combiu ug their energies to con
vert the m i ,minding school ground
into an outdoor classroom. Upon
request, a soil Conservation Service
|S ( S, icpt. ,entice visited the center,
and along «ith the teachers, students
and paients, an appraisal o f the
school sit, was made. Objectives
were discussed and a plan was
developed lor the BEC.
Recently one o f the projects in the
plan was started. The sloping
ground in 11out o f the center lacked
sufficient vegetation to protect it.
I his tail, when the rains started, the
students were able to observe that
when- the ground was barren, the
soil was washed onto the sidewalk.
Io prevent lurther erosion, with the
technical assistance o f the SCS, the
parents, teachers and students
woiked and leitili/ed the ground and
planted periw in kle , a tra ilin g
evergieen plant. W ith the planting
complete, barkdust was spread
around the plants and covered with
netting to keep it in place. With a lit
tle caie anil time, the area will grow
io a low maintenance cover,
providing protection and beautifying
the school grounds.

School bus
most used
The yellow school bus is the chief
means o f transportation to school
for elementary and secondary school
students, followed by walking and
private automobiles, according to a
report from the Burea o f the Census,
U.S. Department o f Commerce. The
report, based on a nationwide sur
vey, is the lirst o f its kind published
by the Bureau to measure the distan
ce, time, and mode of transportation
o f students.
School buses are needed to tran
sport about 20 million or 40 percent
o f the 49 m illio n students to and
from school. I he report notes that
by contrast, only 7 percent o f public
school students are estimated to have
been transported to school at public-
expense 50 years ago.
The growth in the use o f school
buses is most evident lor elementary
school students. Comparison o f the
new figures, gathered in October
1978, with those Iron, a 1969 study
shows an increase from .17 percent to
41 percent in the p ro p o rtio n o f
students in kindergarten through
grade 6 transported by school bus.
