Plans are being completed for a “ feast lor the soul" to be presented free ot charge to the general public, and that means you and me. The feast takes the form of a two day symposium with a banner title: “ Documents of Alrician Culture". Under the banner lectures, pictures, photographs, art pieces will develop the theme: “ Social and Psychological Aspects of Masking and Ceremony in African Art” -“ Disguise of Power- Display of Power." Hours for the full feast run from 9:30 a.m. through the day’s courses and into the evening hours with suitable breaks for lunch and dinner. Actual dining is, of course, at your own expense, at a place of your .boosing, although there is some talk of a lunch in the Art Museum (by reser vation) with some of the lectures. A list of illustrious speakers will guide us through the primitive majestry of our artistic past in Africa. Among them are Roy Sieber, C urator of Ethnographic Art at Indiana University Museum of History and An thropology, Susan Vogle, Associate Curator, Department of Primitive Art of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Marie (Monni) Adams, Associate Curator at Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology and Professor of Art and An- throplogv at Harvard University; Marcilene K. Wittmer, Associate Prolessor of Anthropology at University of Miami; Tamara Northern, Curator of African Art at Dartmouth College; Hans-Joachim Koloss, Head of African Department, Linden Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. On Sunday, November 18th, speakers will be Rene Bravmann, Professor of Art History, University of Washington; J. Weldon Smith, Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Mac Murray College, and Herbert Cole, Professor of Art and Anthropology at University of California. Other interesting guests will be in attendance at sometime or other during this unusual event, and more information will be shared as the program rounds out. We shall share with you now the specific topics to be covered over the two days of the symposium. The Gebauer Collection, already installed at the Por tland Art Museum has an important display of masks from the Cameroons brought to America, and to Portland, by Dr. Paul Gebauer. t hese masks, and the book written about them and African Art by Dr. Gebauer, are the examples appearing as the subject point of the event. The program, itself, is funded by a grant from the Oregon Committee for the Humanities, and affiliate of the National Endow ment for the Humanities. Mark the dates November 17th and 18th on your calendar! • •• On a shopping trip from Billings, Montana Dr. Llewelyn Jones and Mrs. Jones, were houseguests of Dr. Samuel Brown this past week.
