Gates are a busy couple, each working indepen dently in the behalf o f people and both accom plishing in fields not routinely tackled by Black people. For instance, Ms. Gates (she usually signs her work: J.M. Gates) was the only Black person we saw exhibiting among all the others o f the representatives o f the private small free press o f Oregon a few weeks ago in Portland’ s A rt Quake. J.M. Gates was representing her own "Circle Press". She publishes "C irc le F o r u m " , a medium in periodical form which she edits for poetry, a special kind o f poetry called “ reversible” , as it can be read backwards as well as forward. J.M. The group is to increase “ community awareness” to the real hunger existing in the world and will work cooperatively through young people to raise emergency funds, begining in 1980, to combat the crisis. Herb C aw thorne Herb Cawthorne was nothing less than sensational in his portrayal o f W.E.B. DuBois recently at Portland State University in a Lincoln Hall performance presented three times during the week end. We saw him the first night and learned a lot about DuBois and his times. Cawthorne was unforgettable. He had early command o f his audience. They hung on his every word during his long soliloquy. The pathos, the pride o f this great man’s life came alive Cawthorne’ s vocal timbre, voice control, diction and pace were all richly rewarding to hear. The script, flawlessly written by Cawthorne and Jeanna W oolley, were strengthened by their recent research on DuBois, revealed DuBois as s trik in g ly contem porary in thought, not blinking the fact that he died more than a decade ago at an age well past 90 years. Staging and lighting were effective adjuncts to a superior performance. Music was ably handled by Richard M offatt, widely recognised for his abilities at piano and organ and for his own artistry as a com poser, arranger, and choral conduc tor. Sponsors o f this very enjoyable, educational evening should all be happy to have brought to the general public so much o f solid Black history and so much good theatre.
