T h e se a n d o th e r changes w o u ld not have happened had it not been fo r the vig ila n t e ffo r ­ ts and vision o f the elders. In P asco, W a s h ­ in g to n , the p o p u la tio n went fro m six Blacks in 1940 to 2,500 by 1948, and the parallel between the Roslyn set­ tlers in 1880s and the Pasco pioneers o f 1940s are am azing. A t firs t there was th e s u s p ic io n a n d la c k o f coo pe ration fro m the residents, then the fo rm a tio n o f a strong co m m u n ity feeling. The one th in g th a t Pasco d id not have going fo r it, however, was the awe in sp irin g beauty o f the Roslyn m ou ntains o r the tem perate Seattle weather. Ms. K atie M oo ne y recalled that she cried every day fo r a year when she looked o u t fro m her tra ile r cam p o n to the tum blew eeds, sage­ brush and te rrib le dust storm s o f the Plains area. But w ith in a short tim e residents were able to b u ild th e ir ow n homes and nestle in . W ith o u t m uch help fro m the c ity fathe rs, they were fo rc e d to lay th e ir o w n pipes fo r w ater and sewage disposal. But they had com e to stay. M s. So w h at Pasco la cke d in scenic s p le n d o r was m o re th a n c o m p e n ­ sated fo r by the expansiveness o f the hum an s p irit, and newcom ers lik e Pat A lfo r d w ho had never heard o f Pasco u n t il her h u s b a n d ’ s rece nt re lo ca tio n there can say w ith p rid e , “ I love it here. T h is is m y hom e and I w o u ld n 't w a n t to liv e a n y o th e r place.” N o one, it seems, has m ore zeal fo r N o rth w e st liv in g and tra d itio n s than do the recent transp la nts.
