Portland Observer October 4. 1979 Page 5 Nigerians celebrate Independence 1 There's a lot more to c o n ta c ts ^ ^ T y -J ^ than meets the eye by Kathryn Bogle In a colorful day-long celebration, the 19th anniversary o f Nigerian In­ dependence was observed by the Por­ tland Chapter o f the National Union o f Nigerian Students on Saturday, September 29. The day began with a Holy Mass at Christie Hall on the Campus o f the University o f Portland with the Rev. Father Anthony Ogbenna as the o ffic ia tin g priest. L a te r, a sym­ posium and a fam ily style dinner open to the public was held at the Community Center o f St. Andrews Catholic Church at 8th Avenue and Alberta Street. Following the discourse on events and the daily life o f Nigerians since the country gained its independence from Great B rita in , the hall was opened fo r dancing. M edicare is a tw o-part federal program to assist citizens 65 years and older or who are disabled pay for the medical expenses. Medicare hospital insurance pays for inpatient hospital care while Medicare medical insurance pays for physicians' ser­ vices and outpatient hospital ser­ vices. Medicare payments are hand­ led by private insurance organiza­ tions like Aetna and Blue Cross who have contracts with the Health Care Financing Administration. The com plexities o f Medicare hospital and medical insurance w ill be explained to the public Thursday, October 25th, in a free seminar spon­ sored by Providence Medical Center as a public service. The seminar is designed to assist Medicare recipients understand the processes o f filing for benefits and claims. In fo rm a tio n w ill be made available by representatives from Providence M edical C enter’ s business office and social services department. Blue Cross o f Oregon, and the Medicare C laim s A d ­ m in istra tio n o f Aetna L ife & Casualty Insurance Com pany.
