4-H Choral Ensemble
4-H choir celebrates six years
The Portland 4-H Choral Ensem­
ble is celebrating it’ s sixth anniver­
sary during the week o f October 10-
14. The celebration is open to the
public and will be held each evening
at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul Church o f
God in Christ, 2859 N.E. Rodney
Street, Bishop J.C. Foster, Pastor.
Sunday at 3:00 p.m. the Ensemble
will do a medley o f songs reflecting
their history through music. Their
theme is “ Glad to be in God’s Ser­
vice.’ ’ A special highlight perfor­
mance w ill be featured at each
program. Choral groups from chur­
ches throughout the Albina corn-
community will participate.

nia. They are recognized for perfor­
ming a variety o f songs under the
direction o f Ira D. M um ford, Exten­

Mumford noted, “ I am very hap­
py with the development growth o f
the Choral Ensemble. They have
adopted me as their ‘ Papa’ , and I am
a proud father.”
Officers o f the group are: Iretta

mons, Secretary-Treasurer. The
Choral Ensemble motto is “ A Group
That Sings Together Through Prayer
W ill Stay Together.”

welcomes one o f its former pastors
to the Northwest again. Rev. Othal
H. Lakey who pastored Allen Tem­
ple C .M .E . Church from 1960 to
1962 will be preaching at Allen Tem­
ple Church on Sunday, October 7th
at the 11 o'clock service.
While pastoring in Portland, Rev.
Lakey was active in all phases o f
community work and a strong leader
in the N A A C P and the Portland
Council o f Churches. It was under
his pastorate that the present church
building o f Allen Temple was pur­
chased 4236 N.E. 8th Avenue.
Since leaving P o rtla n d , Rev.
Lakey has pastored some o f the
larger C .M .E . churches in the
C .E.M . Connection in Shreveport,
Louisiana and Dallas, Texas. He Is
presently serving as Editor o f the
Christian Index, the official church
publication o f the C.M .E. Church.
He was elected to this o ffic e in
Philadelphia in 1974
Allen Temple was the first church
Rev. Lakey pastored after com ­
pleting his Theological Studies at
Drew Seminary. Since then he has
done further studies at Southern
Methodist University and Perkins
School o f Theology. He has been
awarded additional degrees including
his doctorate.
Rev. Lakey is author o f one o f the
most precise and compact historical
books o f the C.M .E. Church called
“ The Rise o f Colored Methodism."
