The leaves are beginning to turn color and to loosen from the branch. Apples are reddening and giving up sweeter and sweeter juices with each crisp bite. We enjoy each lovely day, for the bonus it is, for we know that the rains w ill begin soon. Where did the summer go? What did we do with our beautiful days o f summer? The Observer offers here a few p icto ria l reminders o f what some young Portlanders did during their long summer days o f this year, the “ Year o f the C hild.” Richard Brown and his camera found many young people enjoying themselves in the park areas o f the city. Some were at Peninsula, some were at C olu m b ia or O verlook Parks, some were at park areas in downtown plazas, some were out at Cook Park near Tigard or at Thomas Dairy Farm nearby. The Black United Front arranged a p icn ic fo r children and th e ir families in the Northeast area. Herb Cawthorne and Freddie Davis were there. So were Ken Hendrix and his son Bakari. So was Ty Waters. The camera fo un d a frie n d ly young face behind the footlights en tertaining Overlook Park audiences. Photographed was Linda Brown, daughter o f Dr. and Mrs. Webster Brown, in her role as an actress for the “ Overlook Acting Company” in a production called “ A Spouse for Susie Mouse” . Again Linda appears as a member o f the dance troupe in the “ N ut cracker Demonstration Dance,” a part o f the C om pany’ s “ Fam ily Festival.” The camera also caught Serena Brown (daughter o f Mr. and Mrs. Richard Brown), and a friend, eating an imaginary apple, a pleasantry they learned to enjoy from partici pating with actors o f the Portland Mime Group. A lita s h Sm ith may remember when she knelt at her own porch railing in a pensive moment on a summer day. The camera and Nalaika Smith can recall the summer day when Nalaika had a new hair-do and the world was new. Staff members o f the Black Edu cational Center escorted the Center’s students on a field trip to a park and to a dairy farm. The day was planned for the students by Leo W hitlow of the 4-H N u tritio n Service. The photographer saw Kimberley Barnes and Marriota Smith having a turn at riding a horse, and he saw Solomon Brown and Damen W hite getting better acquainted w ith a pair o f calves at the Thomas Dairy Farm. The cover story for the “ Year o f the C hild” could quite possibly be to ld in B ro w n ’ s picture o f tw o u nide ntifie d little girls sharing a drink from a bubbling fountain. One moment—in a day o f last summer. Love Is B lind... to color, to race, to creed. Love sees the common thread that binds all people into one human family. Love is what it’s all about.
