LOUIS DHAKE NAACP sponsors Census Workshop Louis Drake, C om m unity Set vices Specialist from the U.S. De partment o f Commerce Bureau of the Census, Northwest Regional o f fice, w ill conduct a workshop on the 1980 census, September 27th at 7:00 p.m. in the N orth Branch Public Library auditorium located at 512 N. Killingsworth. This public workshop is free and is sponsored by the Portland branch ot the N A A C P — P o litic a l A ctio n C om m ittee which is chaired by Robert Phillips. Phillips stated that Drake will ex plain during the workshop the im portance o f being counted in the up coming 1980 census and to point out that population and housing figures from the 1980 census will be used to allocate billions of dollars each year in federal, state and local funds for numerous programs that directly benefit Black Americans and others — including funds fo r education, recreation and public safety. Drake w ill also stress that the primary purpose o f the census, as prescribed by the Constitution, is to provide the basics for equal appor tionment among the states o f seats in the House o f Representatives, state legislature, and local election districts. Beniamin Hooks, I xecutive Direc tor o f the N A A ( P, at the N A A C P ’s 70th annual convention held recently in L o u is v ille , called upon every Black American to be counted in the upcoming census and urged N A A C I’ chapters throughout the nation to contribute toward that im portant goal. I he P o rtlan d branch o f the N A A C P hopes the workshop w ill provide the public with a working knowledge o f the 1980 census and make clear that the Bureau o f the Census is responsible for maintain ¡ng the confidentiality o f census in formation collected under Idle 13, U.S.t (the census law ). rhis means that for the 72 years after the 1980 census has been taken, only sworn census workers have access to the in dividual records, and no one else may see them.
