Oregon State predicts wetter winter
The odds are strongly in favor o f a
normal or wetter-lhan-usual winter,
says an Oregon State University at
mospheric scientist who uses 80-year
Oregon weather records to back that
statement.
“ There have never been two con
secutive years since the turn o f the
century that western Oregon—or for
that matter any broad area in Ore
gon— has had precipitation 25 per
cent below normal or drier,” Profes
sor Fred W. Decker points out.
"A n d since last winter and spring
were pretty dry—more than 25 per

Wyden seeks House seat
Ron Wyden, former director o f
Oregon Legal Services fo r the
Elderly, announced his candidacy
for the Democratic nomination to
Congress in the Third Congressional
District, the seat now held by Bob
Duncan.
Wyden said he is running because,
“ Third District Democrats tell me
they need a strong voice to speak for
them and a good ear to listen to
them.
" I ’ m running because all o f us
want to change the policies o f big
government and big special interest
lobbies that burn a hole in our
pocket today."
Wyden told a large crowd that
gathered to launch his campaign,
"Those o f us who have been active in
this community have proven that we
have the know-how and the tough
ness to remake government that does
not meet our needs. I organized
people in the community. We took
on the u tility companies and forced
changes in traditional practices that
were unfair to consumers who pay
the bills. We stood up to the health
and auto insurance companies so
that policies w ould be more
leadable, less discrim inatory, and
produce larger benefit payments. To
gether we helped make a dent in our
inflation problem by showing low
and m iddle income persons with
small savings accounts how to use
new Federal banking laws so that
they could almost double the rate of
interest they earn on their savings.
Together led the fight for health care
areas (other than the Coos Bay re
gion, but rain records were set in the
Willamette Valley and in some parts
o f eastern Oregon.
With just one week gone in the
month, Eugene had 68 per cent more
rain than it generally gets in all o f
September, Decker observed. C or
vallis was 4 1 per cent over the normal
all-month total; Salem, 26 per cent
over. The first week rain reading ai
the Portland A irp o rt Station was
only I0 per cent below normal for
the entire month.
