Michigan State, winners over a weak
Illinois team in their opener 38-16,
Oregon will get a good induction o f
just how good they really are. If, just
i f . .. the Ducks can win at Ann A r
bor. . .then Huskies beware, because
Oregon w ill be sky high when they
return home to face their first game
before a friendly crowd, and Pac-10
rival. My pick Oregon by 3.

I f you believe in magic, dancing
feet and the uncanny ability to read
and pick defenses a p a rt.. then you
must believe the “ rush is on” and at
the helm is one Reggie Ogburn, who
is directing the Duck ship so master
fully.
Ogburn all but destroyed a very
good Colorado defense, gaining 108
yards on 17 carries, and passed for
another 168.
A one man show? No. Dwight
Robertson, the high-stepping sopho
more tailback who destroyed OSU in
last year's finale, was equally impres
sive. Robertson scored 2 T D ’ s on
runs o f I and 9 yards respectively.
The Ducks became the firs t
visiting team to win an opener at
Boulder since 1963, when Southern
Cal accomplished the feat. Oregon
lost the opener at Colorado last year,
24-7. Colorado holds the series edge
5-3.
You have to believe that Oregon is
now on the brink o f having a success
ful program. Remember last year
when the Ducks would go into the
fourth period leading only to suc
cumb. M ostly due to a lack o f
experience and depth. This year
they have both and proved this
against C olorado. There's pride,
exuberance, and a camaraderie that’s
been missing in past Oregon squads.
O regon.. .rea listica lly.. .is really a
year away from full potential. Scan
ning the depth chart you see talent,
young talent waiting in the wings.
“ For the first few games last year,
I don't think our players really felt
they could win. Then they looked
back and realized that except for
maybe one big play in some games,
we could have won. They know they
can win now. And I would anticipate
we’d be able to beat somebody we’ re
not supposed to beat,” said Rich
Brooks before the Colorado game.
Now it's been proven once in
beating the Buffalo’s and, for sure,
before the season ends it will happen
again. It just could happen this week
against Big Ten favorite Michigan
State. Yes, the Ducks are that good.
"Reggie can dart into the hole.”
Defensive coordinator Andy Chris
to ff says Ogburn has feet, ‘ ‘ that
move like a sewing machine.” And
Colorado linebackers concur. Reggie
has proven that he is now a very
good college quarterback, and will
become a great one. He’s proven that
he can put points on the board.
To say the least . the Oregon at
tack is exciting and patient. Against

W ow ! The Generals, seventh
ranked in the state, were really im
pressive in this one.
Jerome Thompson, 6’ , 190 pounds,
running back led the General attack
with 130 yards on 19 carries. Grant
should again rule the PIL.
In a project unprecedented in the
NBA, the Portland Trailblazers ran
as a team in a city-wide road race
September 12th to benefit Emanuel
Hospital’ s Children Center.
The run will be viewed as a condi
tioning exercise fo r the upcoming
training camp, by Head Coach Jack
Ramsay. Ramsay also ran in the
event.
The event covered 6.2 miles.
R egistration fee was $5 w ith all
proceeds going to Em anuel’ s
Children Center.
The B ill W alton compensation
hearings should be settled sometime
this week. Portland is asking for the
moon, while San Diego is offering a
tiny grain o f sand. Portland wants at
least three players, and it’ s still a
wonder to me why Lloyd Free isn't
mentioned.

The Jefferson Dem o’ s showed
some promise in defeating a weak
Mollala team.
Pierre White came o ff the bench to
spark the Demos in this one, and
should have won the starting quar
terback job o ff this performance.
W hite, 6’ , 185 pounds, ju n io r,
scored twice on romps o f 2 and 41
yards.
Eric Battles and Gerald Jessie were
impressive in the backfield. The
Democrats appear stronger this year
and should provide a challenge as the
dark horse in their newly aligned
division.
