LABOR DAY WEEKEND SPECIAL'
Fri., Sat., Sun., & Mon.
Hayes, dubbed "Black Moses" during the height of his popularity,
revolutionized soul music, leading it out o f the era o f the three-minute single in
to two new areas—the completely-orchestrated "concept” album with extend
ed cuts and the Black motion picture soundtrack
H oi Buttered Soul, released on the Enterprise label in 1969. contained only
four cuts, and one. By the Time 1 Get to Phoenix, was over 18 minutes long It
not only became the first album to go gold for Stax Records, it hit platinum.

Hayes’ first solo album. Presenting /saai Hayes, was a low-budget, jazz-
influenced set recorded on the spur o f the moment following a Christmas party
with only bass and drums accompanying hi- piano and s . uce
The second. H ot Buttered Soul (with a close-up cover shot of his shiny beard-
lo_ear scalp,, was something altogether different—a husky, very masculine
baritone rapping and crooning intimately against a massive backdrop o f strings
and horns from the Memphis Symphor . ;
. the Bar-kavs
His new fans weren't satisifed with the three-minute version of Bs the Time /
Get to Phoenix issued on a 4?; they had to have his whole sexy rap in order to
be satiated Many who had never invested in an I P before rushed to get all 18
minutes and 40 seconds o f Hayes' epic performance o f Jim Webb's tunc and
also discovered an equally sensuous 12-minute reading of Burt Bacharach and
Hal David's Hatk on By with its compelling fuzz-toned guitar riff.
