In 1977 Ray Charles was "reunited” with Atlantic Records, the label which
produced his first major hits in the 1950’ s, via a distribution deal lor his own
Crossover Records label.
Ray Charles' single (from his album Renaissance) ol Stevie Wonder's Living
for the City was selected by the National Academy ol Recording Arts and
Sciences to receive a 1975 Grammy, the Oscar o f the recording industry, in the
“ Best RAH Vocal Performance—M ale" category; this was Charles' l()th
Grammy award
In 1976 Ray Charles recorded Porgy A Hess with British singer Cleo l ame on
the RC A label. Produced by Norman G ran/ and arranged by f rank deVol, the
album was nominated for a 1976 Grammy in the “ Best Jazz I P” category.
Ray Charles' classic hit, /'ve Go/ a Woman, was also nominated in 1976 lor
the NARAS Hall ol lame.
Ray Charles was inducted into the Songwriters Hall ot fame in New York in
1976.
Charles' rendition o f America the Beautiful, initially recorded in his 1972
album .-f Message fro m the People released as a single in 1976, was selected by
Roone Arledge of ABC- TV to accompany the network's montage ol I S vac
lories which wound up its telecast o f the 1976 W inter Olympics in Innsbruck
Ray Charles was named "Best Jazz Male Vocalist” in the 1976 Playboy
Magazine Music Awards Readers’ Poll. He was inducted into the Playboy
Music Hall o f lam e in 1968, and has topped its Readers' Poll in several
categories many tunes.
