NEW YORK— N AACP Executive
Director Benjamin L. Hooks deeply
deplored the series o f events leading
up to the resignation o f Ambassador
Andrew Young as the U.S. per
manent representative to the United
Nations and felt that it was equally
regretable that President Carter had
accepted it. Ambassador Young, he
felt, had been "m ade a sacrificial
lamb for circumstances beyond his
c o n tro l."
Due to the immense implications
o f these developments. Hooks there
fore issued a call for a conference
with Black leaders. Joining him in
this c a ll, are Vernon Jordan,
president. National Urban League;
F ra n k lin H. W illiam s, president,
Phelps-Stokes Fund; and Dr. Ken
neth B. C la rk , Psychologist and
Educator.
In Ambassador Young’ s meeting
with Arab representatives on July
26th, Hooks said the Ambassador’s
"encounter did not change—neither
was it intended to alter— U.S. policy
regarding U.S. feelings w ith the
P .L.O .” Hooks said that Young was
merely exercising “ his initiative to
achieve the directed goals o f his
superiors” so he " is deserving o f
high praise rather than the insulting
excoriations to which he has been
subjected."
The following is the full text o f the
NAACP statement in the aftermath
o f President Carter’ s acceptance o f
"T he N AACP feels strongly that
Mr. Young has been made a sacrifi
cial lamb for circumstances beyond
his control and therefore finds it ex
ceedingly d iffic u lt to accept these
developments as unavoidable.
“ Consequently, the N AA C P has
issued a call for a meeting o f Black
leaders to discuss and evaluate the
impact o f M r. Young’s resignation
on the questions o f American foreign
policy, Black-Jewish relations and
the relationship o f Blacks with the
Executive Branch. Hopefully, from
this meeting a consensus w ill be
reached regarding further action in
cluding the p ossibility o f a sub
sequent conference with principal
Jewish leaders.”

whether we can help. Chances are, we can. If not, we can recommend

the kind of professional legal counsel you're entitled to.
The best time to call us, or any attorney, is before you are embroiled in a legal
problem This is called preventative law and it makes a lot of sense.
Regardless, when you call us we will arrange for an initial consultation at
your convenience. Cost $20 We probably can't solve anything in this meeting,
but it is a chance for you to explain your particular problem and for us to give
you some idea of what it'll take to reach a solution. If you want us to proceed,
we'll give you an estimate of the fees you should plan on In writing
