Wherever men gather to discuss athletics invariably the conversation w ill d rift and wander until someone asks. “ Who was the greatest ever to do it?” . From this point on, the conver sation will become hot and heavy Tempers w ill flare and sometimes even fist fights w ill erupt. Boxing fans from continent to continent w ill disagree on who was the greatest heavyweight o f all. A few years ago someone got the bright idea that they would settle this question once and for all by staging the fight of the century. So they went about rounding up all the greats of both the past and present. Joe Louis. Jim C o rbett, Jack Dempsey, Jersey Joe W a lco tt, Muhammad A li and Marciano, to name a few. These greats were paired o ff and the big tourney began. Now the world would finally know who was the greatest <ff all. Oh, sure we’ ve heard Cassius ClXY “ I 4111 the Greatest.” Nobody believed this young man with the loud mouth, who was so brash and abrasive. Even when he predicted the round he w ould destroy his opponent in. Boxing fans only scoffed and said his foes were only set-ups and rank amateurs. Cassius Clay, later to become Muhammad A li, was a mag nificent specimen o f a man. He stood 6’ 3” in his stocking feet, weighed 195 pounds, had a reach o f 82” , was 22-years-old, and could dance like a b u tte rfly and sting lik e a bee. Muhammad A li. One thing that hasn’t been men tioned yet was that this great tourna ment was all up to a computer. In formation was fed into the computer pertaining to all the past champions. The computer digested, then divested and spit out the names o f the fi nalists. Rocky Marciano vs. Muham mad A li. M a rxiano, the Rock, fro m B rockton, Massachusettes, stood 5’ 10” , weighed 180 pounds and had very short arms. H ow ard Cosell w ould ce rta in ly have called the “ Rock” a short-armed fighter. Well, as we all know the computer had Marciano destroying A li and eventually knocking him (A li) out. Now one has to wonder about that. Muhammad has never been stopped .. so that ending is truly ab surd. Then if the short-armed fellow couldn’ t knock A li out, one just has to surmise that all being fair, Muhammad would be the victor via a decision. In this w riter’ s opinion A li would have hit Rocky with so many punch A es that the ‘ B rockton B raw ler” would have retired by the eighth round. Ali, with those long arms o f his w ould have been almost im possible for Marciano to penetrate and get to A li. This fight would remind one o f the mongoose and the cobra W ith A li jabbing and hooking, darting in and out and destroying his much shorter and slower opponent. Just another short note on boxing, am ateur boxing. The V III Pan- American Games arc underway and boxing is underway. Davey A rm strong, the hard-luck but talented amateur from Tacoma, Washington suffered another set-back in his at tempt to gain his first Olympic goal, a Gold Medal. Davey was decisioned M onday night by the W orld Champ from Cuba. The decision 4-1 was met with a chorus o f boos. But just like Mon tre a l, where A rm stro n g soundly defeated Angel Ortiz, (who went on to capture the featherweight title) Davey lost another decision. When people around the world sit down to discuss heart and determ ination, then one Davey Armstrong's name must surface. No one in amateur boxing has been the victim o f so many bad decisions, yet Armstrong continues to pursue his goal. When most Americans Davey’ s age, 23, have retired or moved on to the professionals, young Davey, ob sessed in obtaining the gold.. con tinues on. A couple weeks ago when Trail Blazer trade rum ors were fly in g higher than the skvlab, 1 mentioned one Daryl Dawkins, the man-child from Philadelphia. Well it appears that Dawkins is one o f those attain able centers that Harry Glickman has alluded to as being acceptable to the Blazers. He (Glickm an) lists— B ill W a lto n , Kareem A b d u l Jabbar, Dave Cowens, Moses Malone and Jack Sikma—as unattainable. I cer ta in ly w ould hqpe that Dave Cowen’ s, 6’ 8” , Boston pivotman is unattainable, because Cowen’ s is certainly on the other side o f the mountain. And if Dawkins is being counted seriously by Blazer management, then all is not dark for the City o f Roses next year. Dawkins and Malone are two very young and devastating young cen ters. But let’ s not be too hasty in trading Lucas. Lucas adds stablity to a team and it ’ s something that’s not so easily replaced.
