After a successful run last year, the Navy is repeating their “ Dial-A-Sailor
Program. By calling 227-1758. Portland families or individuals can invite a
visiting sailor to lunch, dinner, golf, tennis, dancing, church, a tour o f the city
or any other function. The Dial-A-Sailor telephones open at Noon on Wed
nesday. June 6th and continue from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. through Saturday,

June 10th is Family Day at Camp Namanu, the Portland Area Council of
Camp Fire’ s resident camp just outside o f Sandy, Oregon. The camp w ill be
open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to anyone interested in visiting the camp.

"Parenting." the second in a series o f free Red Cross courses designed to
help parents understand their children and provide an environment conducive
to their healthy growth, is now available through the Oregon Trail Chapter o f

Multnomah School, which ceases operation at the close o f this school year,
w ill hold a reunion Sunday, June 10th, 2:00-5:00 p.m. at 7688 S.W. Capitol
Highway. Everyone from Multnomah’ s past and present — students, teachers,
principals, friends and neighbors — are invited to the school. The building has
served the children o f Portland for 56 years. After two years o f community
discussion, the Board o f Education last February voted to close it. Children
now attending Multnomah w ill be merged with nearby Maplewood Elemen
tary. Hayhurst or Markham Middle School.
In North Portland, a class in beginning swimming f o r adults is scheduled for
the Salvation Army, 5430 N. Moore. Beginning and intermediate tennis classes
will take place at Jefferson High School, 5210 N. Kerby. A full range o f credit
classes will be offered during the summer at the Cascade Center. Subject areas
in which classes are being offered include anthropology, art, business ad
ministration, and office occupations, developmental education, economics
education, electronic service technology, mathematics, psychology, sociology,
vocational teacher education, and writing. The classes w ill be held in four and

The NAACP is sponsoring a June Tecnth Celebration to be held June 16th at
Irvington Park. This is a time for families and friends to bring a picnic basket

The new board was elected after
the congregation approved a new set
o f By-Laws in A p ril o f this year.
Seven men and women are on the
board and 25 other men and women
fill the committee positions. Iziat
Sweet is the Chairman of the Board.
Berean Baptist Church began in
1955 as a mission and was later
established as a church in 1961, all
under Pastor Russell Smith. The
church is very active in the life o f the
Albina Community. In addition to a
solid evangelical position on the
Bible, the church maintains a variety
o f social demonstrations. Recently
the church adopted a program to
finance a major building project to
erect a new facility to house and ex
pand the present worship and com
munities services. For example, a
Summer Youth Program has been
operated for more than ten years,
this would be made a year-round
program. A counseling service is now
offered on a limited basis o f two
days a week. This service available to
the church, child care parents, and
people o f the community currently,
would be made full-time. The child
care established by Pastor Rozell
Gilmore, in 1969, to serve working
parents, would be increased from
approximately thirty children to fifty.
The volunteer tutorial program o f
fered only in the school year w ill
eventually include a needed literacy
program. There are often times when
the church s ta ff does in fo rm a l
referral for employment and other
resources for people o f the com
m unity. Several members o f the
congregation are actively involved in
prison work in both men and women
centers.
The Berean Conservative Baptist
Church is a growing group o f nearly
150 Christians. They are Black and
white, some highly educated, others
not at all, varying in age from very
old to not so old, married, single,
divorced, to widows. However,
visitors agree they have a contagious
love for each other and excitement
for what they are doing. The minister
o f the church is Reverend W illie O.
Peterson.

children with special emphasis on the
children around the world.
The pastor, Reverend T .L. Stray-
hand, states that flags from many
nations Of the world w ill be displayed
in decorating the church to give the
international setting. The children of
the church w ill be flag bearers
leading the procession at the begin
ning o f the m orning w orship.
Children w ill renew their pledge o f
allegiance to the Christian flag and
the Kingdom o f God.
The Children’s Choir will render
special music fo r the service.
Children will be participating in the
total worship program. A special
period for Dedication and Blessing
o f Children is planned by the pastor.
Parents are urged to come and bring
their children for this celebration
service and present them fo r
dedication as we seek the blessings of
God for them in this International
Year o f the Child.
