Brown tackles difficult subjects in
the “ Tony Brown’s Journal” show
and refuses to be intim idated by
Blacks or whites who try to force him
into stereotyped ways o f thinking or
speaking concerning race-related
issues. The first program was " A in ’ t
A in ’t Right,” that stressed the im
portance o f good speech in all ethnic
groups, though based on ghetto lan
guage. Another was "C an Whites
Raise Black Children?” This show
questioned why Black children raised
in advantaged white homes show
dramatic increases in I.Q. and i f this

means whites are better fitted for
parenthood than Blacks.
Tony Brown will be speaking on
the topic, "W hen Life Gives You
Lemons, Make Lemonade,” at 8:00
p.m., Thursday, May 24th in Dear
born Hall Auditorium , Oregon State
University. He will also conduct a
seminar, " T V . as a H istorical
Tool,” on Friday, May 25th, from
9:00 a.m. to 12 noon in the Mem
orial Union Board Room, Oregon
State University. Both programs are
open to the public. Those wishing to
attend the Friday morning seminar
must preregister by noon, May 23rd,
at the A ffirm ative Action Office,

Interior design draws seamstress
Patti Miles, a June graduate o f
Grant High School is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Miles. Patti
was presented by her parents at the
1979 Spring Starlight C otillion o f
The Links, Inc. at the Sheraton
Hotel.
During her high school days Patti
was an active and enthusiastic parti
cipant in things o f Grant student life.
Currently she is a Class Council rep
resentative for the Student Council
and had been a Junior Counselor
four times and was even a recruiter
for counselors during her third year
o f school.
Patti tackled fund raising projects
and helped to raise money for athle
tics through the Rally Ribbon groups
who designed, distributed and sold
ribbons at every m ajor fo o tb a ll,
baseball and basketball game.
This young lady likes 4-H work
and was busy with this group for six
years. She sews well and makes many
o f her own clothes. We have photo
graphed her in a wool suit which she
made and exhibited at County and
Oregon State Fair.
To learn about wool Patti even
raised a lamb o f her own which she
housed in the family garage. Patti re
versed the M ary o f the nursery
rhyme by following her lamb from
its bottle days to its shearing as it
grew to maturity.
Patti has contributed her time also
to service in the larger community by
assisting the Toy and Joy Makers at
Christmas and by making Christmas
stockings for the children at Volun
teers o f America.
Preparing for the future, Patti has
had some job experience working as
a sales person and in offices between
school sessions.
Patti intends to enroll at Drake
U niversity where she has already
been accepted for the fall term. She
w ill study Interior Design with a
chance to absorb some o f the feeling
o f good architecture w hich this
talented girl also appreciates.
Emmaly Williams, the daughter o f
Margaret Carter o f this city and of
Charles Williams o f Buffalo, New
York, will be graduating from Wash
ington-M onroe High School very
soon.
Emmaly has engaged her time with
the Black Student Union at Washing
ton-Monroe and is the Activities D i
rector o f this organization. A serious
student, Emmaly is a member o f the
Health Occupations for Students o f
America, and also she was recently
invited to spend a weekend at
Oregon State U n ive rsity in a
program arranged for students who
showed special academic interest in
mathematics and science.
In team skills Emmaly has let
tered all three years on the Varsity
Community garden plots ready
The A lbina Action Center, 707
N.E. Knott Street, has a Gardening
Project again this year which is open
to the community. It is located adja
cent to Geneva’s Club, on the corner
o f Skidmore and Williams.
The garden plots are open to the
public, along with the necessary tools
and needs. We ask that those partici
pating in the program share their
harvest with elderly, low-income or

Volleyball team, and has received
several awards — one as Best Defen
sive Player and another as a P IL A ll-

Outside o f school, Emmaly has
worked as a receptionist and book
keeper at Gary L u cke y’ s H a ir
Fashion. Emmaly attends M allory
Church o f Christ as a member o f
their Youth Group.
C u rre n tly Em m aly is already
enrolled in the dental assistant pro
gram at the University o f Oregon
Dental School. She is getting practi
cal training through this program at
the Northeast Russell Street Dental
Clinic.
Emmaly plans to enter the Univer
sity o f Washington School o f Den
tistry in the fall.

improve the community and provide
