In every area of creativity there are always a select few who possess a
unique talent that inevitably forces them out in front of the masses. There are
many things that one c a r attribute to such blanket notoriety such as: being in
the right place at the right time, unlimited financial backing, a good P.R. per
son, etc. But the bottom line is always a unique talent. "The Divine Sarah" has
been blessed with such a gift. For any entertainer to be continually sought after
by music lovers around the world for over three decades is a major accom
plishment in itself.
Despite the weather conditions outside of Agnes Flanagan Chapel on the
campus of Lewis and Clark College this past week-end, inside the standing-
room-only audience was totally engulfed in the warming melodic songs from
Sarah Vaughan.
She was in excellent voice throughout the entire evening's performance. Her
musical articulation, pitch and control are almost unbelievable. Sarah's latest
album, "H ow Long Has This Been Going O n", is already a collector's item.
This marks her first release in over five years, her last being "Live in Japan".
Sarah Vaughan s performance this week-end will be a musical experience I will
never forget. I think Tony Bennett said it best when once asked what he
thought of Sarah Vaughan, he replied, "The finest singer in the w orld."

Rosemary Allen has become synonymous with Black theater in Oregon
down through the years. Chronologically she's a young woman, but in viewing
her many accomplishments in the past five or six years relating to the arts,
she's matured beyond her years. Ms. Allen's production of "Raisin in the
Sun" last year was given excellent reviews throughout the whole state.
Hopefully, her latest effort, "W ine in the Wilderness", will be a repeat of the
same success. The play opened last week to a capacity audience that was
receptive the entire evening The play was written by Alice Childress in the late
1960's. Childress, bom during the "Black Renaissance" of the 1920's, is
credited for not only being a playwright but also a writer, director and lecturer.
"W ine in the Wilderness" is a situation com edy/dram a centered around a
Black artist's search for three degrees of Black womanhood rolled up into
"one” . The leading role was played by the very versatile Deborah Hicks along
with Al Jamison, Vanessa Dell Jobe, Otto Rutherford and Marvin Johnson. If I
tell you any more, you'll go and see it anyway, but I just want to make sure. It's
an excellent presentation!
