"Children and Ealing: The First Six Years" a lecture by Dr. Arn Strasser, a
Portland chiropractic physician. The lecture w ill include suggestions for the
child’ s diet from birth to six years o f age and dietary principles to guide parents

Wine Sip follows 'Wine’
On Friday, January 26th, Port
land Black Repertory Theater w ill
open its premier production, “ Wine
In The Wilderness.”
“ Wine In The Wilderness” is a
one-act comedy-drama written by
Black playw right A lice Childress
(Chill-dress). The small cast o f five
features: Otto Rutherford, Deborah
Hicks. A1 Jamison, Vanessa Jobe
and M arvin Johnson. Rutherford,
who plays the part o f Oldtimcr, act
ed with the Civic Theater in its early
days from 1952-60. A1 Jamison stars
as Bill. Jamison was the Founder-
Director o f the Greater Kansas City
Black Contemporary Players, 1968-
72. The leading role o f Tommy is
played by model, singer, and actress
Deborah Hicks, who also starred in
the Portland State University pro
duction o f “ A Raisin In The Sun.”
The play is set in Harlem and it
telft the stdfy o f an artist. Bill, who is
completing his triplych. A triptych
(trip-tick) is three paintings on one
subject, and Bill's subject is Black
Womanhood. “ Wine In The Wilder
ness” is B ill’ s title for his painting of
the most beautiful and most together
Black woman in the world. He un
dergoes quite a transformation when
he decides to paint Tommy as the
other side o f his triptych, “ the most
messed up chick in the w orld,” and
discovers that underneath her
brashness she is the “ Wine In The
Wilderness.”
“ Wine In The Wilderness” is pro
duced and directed by Portland ac
tress, director, Rosemary Allen. Set
and costumes are designed by Robert

February 10th the North Portland Knights o f Columbus Council 85279 has
planned a Spaghetti Dinner from 5:00-8:00 p.m., with bingo following. Adults
S3, children 12 years and under $1.50. Proceeds o f Dinner to go to the Peter
son’ s Adult Foster Care Center. Proceeds from bingo to go to Council. The
Dinner and bingo w ill be held at Queen o f Peace Church, 2434 N. Farragut,
Portland.
Portland Downtown YW CA w ill host a showing o f slides and movies o f
Egypt taken on the December charter tour to Cairo. The slide and movie
showing w ill be January 27th at 2:30 p.m. at the Downtown YW CA, 1111 S.W.
10th Avenue. The program w ill be open to the public and w ill be free o f charge.
The Temples o f Luxor, Tombs o f the Valley o f the Dead, Memphis and
Alexandria w ill be included in the picture.
The Annual Mothers March on Birth Defects, a drive against Am erica’s
m ajor child health problem, is scheduled for January 24th-31 st in the tri-county
area.
M others March volunteers this year w ill distribute health education
literature about low birthweight. Low birthrate is the leading cause o f infant
death and the major cause o f childhood disabilities. W ith early prenatal care
and good nutrition during pregnancy, many women could reduce the risk o f
having seriously ill babies.
Money raised during the tri-county Mothers March w ill help support work in
the area o f neonatal intensive care and research, plus many other research
programs. Anyone interested in participating should call 222-9434.
Two Republican Governors w ill jo in in a tribute to a Democratic Governor
on Friday, January 26th. A testimonial dinner-dance on that date w ill honor
former Governor Bob Straub and his wife Pat for their 25 years o f public ser
vice. Both Governor Victor Atiyeh and former Governor Tom McCall have in
dicated they w ill attend. A bipartisan committee is arranging the 8:00 p.m. din
ner in the H ilton Hotel Ballroom, preceded by a 6:00 p.m. cocktail hour. Danc
ing to the music o f Byll Davis’ orchestra w ill complete the festivities. Reser

Jazz violinist Leroy Jenkins, an
alumnus o f the Revolutionary Trio,
and a musician whom critics call, “ a

Jenkins began studying violin at
the age o f eight, playing at the Ebe-
neezer Baptist Church in Chicago.
His companion in the string section

known as “ Bo Diddley.”
For a youngster in Jenkins’
Chicago neighborhood, music was
an acceptable preoccupation, but the
violin was not. He says he developed
a special method o f walking in order
to hide the case. H ow ever, he
became a music teacher and perform

member o f the radical Black music
organization, the Association for the
Advancement o f Creative Musicians.

Humphrey believes students in the
class w ill develop other tools that will
help them avoid rape.
“ We teach sim ple things that
anyone can do to avoid rape,” says
Humphrey. “ A lot o f it has to do
w ith the element o f surprise. I f
women are able to respond to a situa
tion swiftly and convincingly it re
duces their chances o f being raped.”
For women who believe their per
sonality does not lend itself to a swift
and convincing physical response,
the course also covers psychological
techniques that have been usee suc
cessfully by women to avoid rape
when being threatened, Humphrey
says.
The class is being offered during
the current winter term, and w ill be
offered again in spring term, which

peoples* inalienable right to indepen
dence.
As for the Soviet Union, it is ready
to join efforts with all who subscribe
to these principles.
