Jackson invited to Washington
Eugene Jackson, Executive Direc­
tor o f the Northwest M inority Con­
tractors Association, has received a
special invitation to attend a White
House A n ti- In fla tio n Meeting
scheduled for Friday, January 26,
1979, in Washington, D.C.
Jackson w ill be the guest o f Vice
President Walter Mondale and w ill
also attend a reception in the State
Dining Room immediately following
the meeting.
For the past five years Jackson has
been actively involved in supporting
the e ffo rts o f small businessmen
throughout the area. Recently, he
has given particular attention to the
problems in fla tio n has caused the
small businessmen, farmers and con­
tractors, who lack the profit margins
and other options necessary to cope
with the devastating conditions o f in­
flation.
Jackson serves on several com­
munity-based councils and organi­
zations
in
M ultnom ah
and
Clackamas counties and the North­
west Region. Jackson represented

Nick Barnett, member of the KBPS Advisory Council for Community
Listening, looks over jazz records in anticipation of "Jazz Night,"
Friday evening. February 9th. on KBPS 1850 AM. Thia is part of the
station s third annual Pledge Weak special programming to raise un­
derwriting funds for the "KBPS Seeing Sound," special on-the-air pro­
gram service for blind and handicapped parsons. Thia programming is
not funded by the Portland Public Schools, licansaa of KBPS. Gena
Still, former host of Gena Still's Jazz Concert, on KOIN radio, will
present wall-known Portland jazz performers, and excerpts from their
performances, from 6:80-8:00 p m.. and 9:30 p.m. until midnight, on
February 9th. Barnett has bean executive director of the Metropolitan
Human Relations Commission for the past two years.
Tax deferral forms ready
SALEM — Oregon senior citizens
who want to defer th e ir fu tu re
property taxes have until A pril 1st to
file applications with their county
assessors. Effective this year, per­
sons who are already participating in
the program w ill have their deferrals
continued automatically.
Under Oregon’s Senior Citizen’ s
Property Tax Deferral program, resi­
dents age 62 and older can delay
paying p roperty taxes on th e ir
homes. The taxes, plus six percent in­
terest, are due when the owner dies,
sells the property or begins earning
excess income from the property.
The spouse o f a homeowner who dies
while participating in the program
may continue the deferral if he or she
is at least age 59Vi.
T o apply fo r the program , a
homeowner must be at least 62 years
old by March 1st; have recorded title
to the property or be purchasing the
property under a recorded sales con­
tract; live on the property; and earn
less than $1800 yearly fro m the
property.
The Oregon D epartm ent o f
Revenue (O D R ) adm inisters the
program. The department reviews
applications from county assessors'
offices and pays the property taxes
for homeowners.
Persons taking advantage o f the
deferral may still be eligible for a
H om eowner and Renter Refund
Program (HARRP) claim, i f their
annual household income is under
$16,000. The HAAR P refund does
not become a lien on the taxpayer’ s
property.
School counselling available

program, designed to assist youths
from ages 14 to 27 advance their edu­
cation, w ill be at Portland Com­
munity College’ s Cascade Center,
705 N. Killingsworth, every Wednes­
day from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
program offers guidance and coun­
seling fo r persons in the 14 to 27
age bracket who wish to improve
their educational status beyond its
present level. The program assists
persons in choosing the most feasible
option and assists them in gaining
admission and applying for financial
aid.
