Integration important at ASB
A t sixteen lenny Wong first set
foot in America, speaking broken
English and having no jo b skills.
She, her two sisters and her parents
crossed the Pacific from Hong Kong
to seek opportunities in the United
States where her grandfather had set
tled.
But for Jenny, the very handicaps
which made the transition from life
in the Orient to life in Oregon d if
ficult have turned into an asset.
Two years later, Jenny is a teller
American State Bank
for American State Bank at 28th and
S.E. Holgate. She was hired in part,
"because she’ s bilingual and can
assist our Chinese customers who
speak little or no English,” said V.F.

” 1 like working us a bank teller. I
like to help people,” Jenny smiles
enthusiastically. "R ight now, I just
want to get some experience
w orking," she says.

“ After doubling the rates in the
region and posing a threat to the
historic anti-m onopolistic system
upon which this 40-year program is
based, the actual additions to the
generating capacity contemplated
add only ten to twenty percent to the
total power supply.
" A prudent approach to our
existing situation would be this: We
should not allow the Bonneville
Power Administration to sign con
tracts to buy the output of nuclear
plants beyond WPPSS 1 and 2, or
cover the costs o f new plants in the
event they are completed and do not
produce power. In addition, since
Congress is calling for a new audit o f
the Working Public Power I and 2
construction projects (nuclear plants)
pleted w ith in the fin a n cia l con-
tion on those projects until we ascer
tain whether the plants can be com
pleted within the financial constraints
o f the real ability o f the system to
generate sufficient revenues to cover
those costs and whether or not —
looking at Trojan — the plants can
operate if they are completed.
"In s te a d o f moving heedlessly
down this thermal road, we should
investigate the possibility o f creating
the same amount of megawatts of
generating capacity through en
hancing the generating capacity of the
river and the storage potential for
firm power w ith in the existing
Federal hydroelectric system, and
determine the reality o f the fiscal
system, the entire Federal Columbia
River Power System and BPA.
" T h is may require a fu ll
Congressional investigation. A com
prehensive study should also be
made o f conservation potential
within the system in order to deter
mine the actual power needs after the
rates have been increased. There
should be no new contracts signed
until extensive hearings have been
held regarding existing systems and
until there have been actual accurate
determ inations o f the overall
capacity o f the existing system
without additions in light o f these
additional factors to be considered.”
Criticizing Senator Hatfield, who
along with Washington’ s Senator
Scoop Jackson, is sponsoring the
b ill, Cook said, "W e should not
mortgage future generations to
possible inefficient, ineffective and
unw orkable methods o f power
generation without first knowing the
consequences.”
