These vocationa l students w ill

for use in their training programs at
the community college.
C onstruction w ill include 7250
square feet o f open-air covered space
for use as an outdoor lab in training
carpenters, brick masons, and pile
drivers. 2300 square feet o f
modifications to an existing building
fo r additional lab and classroom
space to be shared by several
programs.
These projects were recommended
by the recent “ Blue Ribbon” citizens
review o f M H C C vocationa l-
technical programs, according to Dr.
Jack M iller, M HCC dean.
“ The citizens’ committee speci
fic a lly cited an o u td o o r lab fo r
training apprentices as one o f the
most c ritic a l space needs at the
college,” Miller said.
W ith labor provided by students in
cooperation with local joint appren
ticeship training committees, total
cost for materials, plans, permits,
and excavation is estimated at about
$25,000, approxim ately $2.65 per
square foot.
“ T his is an excellent way fo r
students to get practical experience
w hile the programs involved get
training facilities at a very low cost,”
M iller said.

programs and w ill be a large, open
area suitable for either classroom or

A ll construction w ill be in the

A t its September meeting, the

About 500 apprenticeship trainees
are expected this year at MHCC, ac

“ We expect increases this year in
programs for carpenters, drywallers,

Helding said.
The college programs are offered
in cooperation with local appren
