Jumper wins Tanqueray Award
F ra n k lin Jacobs, a little man w ith
a lo fty m o tivatio n that put him up
higher on his own pow er than any
o th e r A m e ric a n in h is to ry, is the
w in n er o f the T a n q u e ra y Achieve-
n ^ n t A w a r d f o r e x c e lle n c e in
am ateur athletics.
Jacobs received a silver tro p hy fo r
his record high jum p o f 7-feet, 714-
inches. In a gathering o f track and
field notables at G a lla g h e r’s, he was
d w a r f e d by th e cross b a r fr o m
M ad is o n Square G ard e n w hich he
cleared at the M illro s e G am es last
January 27th. A t 5-fe et, 8 -inches he
was nearly tw o feet under the stan­
dard, but he is convinced he can go
considerably higher in his quest fo r a
g o ld m e d a l at th e 1980 O ly m p ic
Games in M oscow .

ners o f this a w a rd .”

said when he looked over the list o f
