Convention opens on cheerful note
b y R o n Sykes, Jr.
Monday, July 3rd delegates from
all over the United States Rowed into
the M em orial Coliseum to begin
registration for the 69th Annual
N A A C P Convention.
By 10:00 a .m . the M em o rial
Coliseum complex was heavily
populated with enthusiastic conven
tioneers all sporting a colored name
tag, which signified that they had
paid at least $7 to participate in all
upcoming activities of the conven
tion.
The first major event of the con
vention was the Commerce and In
dustry Show. The Exhibit H a ll,
where this show took place, was a
labyrinth o f booths and displays
representing every sort o f industry
imaginable. The proprietors were in
terested in not only displaying their
products, they were also eager to give
them to every passerby. There was
hardly a person that left the exhibit
without a shopping bag filled with
posters, calendars, and other artifacts
to remind them that they had attend
ed the 69th Annual N A A C P Con
vention.
The convention officially opened
at 7:00 p.m ., as the delegates assem
bled in the main arena for an orien
tation meeting and a memorial ser
vice. Everyone present took their
seats in solemn reverence as such
personalities as M arg aret Bush
Wilson, Chairman, Board of Direc
tors, ascended to the platform to
open the session. The meeting took
place in an orderly fashion, and the
hearts of all were swollen with pride
as everyone watched and knew that
the activities that are to shape
the future o f all minorities were
beginning on a successful note.
