Cynthia Turner was born August 31,
946 in Athens, Texas to M r. Eddie L.
iverton and M rs. Celia Mac Overton,
he was the third daughter of a family of
ight girls.
Mrs. Turner joined Allen Chapel
i.M .E. Church of Athens. Texas. She
as a faithful member, serving as a
unday School teacher and as a member
f their Youth Choir. She graduated from
»ogan High School in Fairfield. Texas in
lay 1963.
Mrs. Turnpr worked as a bookkeeper
ar the Girl Scouts of America for three
ears and the Albina Action Center for
he last three years. She was a willing
nd dedicated volunteer w orker with the
iportmen L ittle League. She was recent-
y appointed to coordinate the snack
»agon and fund raising events for the
rving Park L ittle League.
Mrs. Turner was married to Fred
burner. Jr. on August 31. 1975. They
vere the parents o f three children. Ce
e lia D . Overton, Alvin S. Overton, and
ianielle L . T urner. They were the foster
■»rents of Lavelle Woods.
Cynthia T u rn e r died on May 12. 1978.
Services were held on M ay 17th at New

The King Improvement Associations' General Membership Meeting will be held on
Tuesday. May 23. 1978, at 7:30 p.m., in the Display Area, King Neighborhood Facility.

The eleventh annual Northwest Vocal Jazz Festival will be held at M t. Hood
Community College Saturday. May 20th. More than 110 high schools from Oregon.
Washington, California, and Idaho are entered in the Saturday festival. Preliminary
rounds begin at 8:00 a.m. A concert by the finalists in each division is scheduled for
the M HCC gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. The MHCC Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform
following the high school groups. Admission is $1 for adults and 50c for students and
children.
U N C F W ine Sip
Portland Alumni of United Negro College Fund schools are
planning their First Annual U N C F Alumni Wine Sip on Sunday, May 21st from
3.00 7:30 p.m. at the Del Rio Room. Cosmopolitan Hotel, 1030 N .E. Union. Wine fruit
punch, cheese and crackers will be served at this get acquainted event. There will be
music and door prizes. Tickets are available at the door. $6 donation.
M t. Hood Community College w ill present two lecture aeries about Egypt and
related areas as a supplement to the King Tutankhamun Exhibit Tour scheduled for
Seattle this summer. The first series will be offered May 19th and 26th with the
second series running June 23rd and 30th. Each lecture will start at 7:30 p.m. in the
A rt Mall Theater on the Gresham campus.
A community night for friends and neighbors of the W hitaker/Colum hia Middle
Schools, Faubion, King, Meek, Rigler, Vernon, and Woodlawn elementary schools will
be held on May 24th, 7:30 p.m. at W hitaker Middle School, 5135 N .E. Columbia
Boulevard. Featured will be a CPR Demonstration and a Crime Prevention Slide
Presentation.
The Community Coalition for School Integration invites you to attend a “G et I t
Together" Party, on Friday. May 19th, 6:00 p.m. to Midnight at the St. Andrews
Community Center, 4940 N .E . 8th at Alberta. Tickets are 13 for adults and $1 for
children under twelve, also family tickets for >8. There will be wine, beer, and a fruit
juice bar (no host) open from 6:00 to 11:00p.m. Served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. will be a
buffet dinner free with party ticket. Live Entertainment: Jefferson Music groups;
Koco Krispies and Liquid Motion Dance Troup; other surprises between 6:30 and 8:30
p.m. Live disco dancing from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m.

Memories will be shared this week by many of the folks who have attended Beach
Elem entary School at some time during the last fifty years. Thursday, Friday, and
Saturday have been set aside for a host of special events for the 50th ‘ jiniversary
Celebration. A highlight of the celebration will be the Friday aftern» an no host
luncheon at 12:15 followed by the Cornerstone Ceremony from 1:15 to 1:45. Mayor
Goldschmidt. Area I Superintendent Fletcher and Deputy Superintendent Kleiner will
briefly address friends and alumni of Beach before the opening of the 1928 cornerstone
by members of that class.
The Bright Stars of F lin t Michigan will give a concert on Saturday, M ay 20th, 7:00
p.m. For the benefit of the children of M rs. Addie W ard. To be held at Evangelist
Center, 5522 N . Albina, tickets w ill be $3 for children and $5 for adults.
The fourth annual Oregon Women’s Conference w ill be held June 23rd, 24th, and
25th at Lewis and Clark College. There w ill be seventy workshops covering lifestyles,
education, law, mental health, careers, child care, media, religion, and political
process. Included in the scheduled events is an a rt display by Oregon women, a
candidates fair, athletes panel including Toni Lear, Women’s W orld Boxing
Association Junior Light W eight Champion, entertainment by Sweet Honey in the
Rock, a Washington D.C. based group, and poetry readings and music featuring the
Ursa M inor Choir.
Washington Park Zoo w ill hold its T hird Annual Senior Citizens' Day June 6th,
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Activities include: free admission to the zoo for all senior
citizens and their companions, free train rides, free flowers for the first 2,000 senior
citizens, entertainm ent all day - music, dancing, drama. Zoo guides and other
volunteers w ill be in attendance to welcome senior citizens, give tours and to answer
questions. Bring your lunch - or buy your lunch from our snack bars, T ri-M e t Bus 862
offers direct service to the zoo from downtown Portland and Beaverton Park and Ride.

N orth Portland Branch L ib rary wall present the film "Tut: The Boy King" on
Thursday, M ay 25th at 7:00 p.m. This beautiful, hour-long tour of the treasures of
King Tutankhamun allows the viewer a bird’s-eye detail of the 55-piece exhibit,
including the parchesi-like games the 10-year-old Pharoah used, his diminutive gold
inlaid chair, jeweled necklaces and carved boxes. The film creates a sense of the
excitem ent of the original 1922 archaeological discovery by Howard C arter and the
m ystery of Egyptian culture. This free film program is open to the public. For

The Y M C A North Project Move Junior Drama Club will be sponsoring a “Skate and
Disco” recruitm ent fund raiser Thursday, M ay 25th, 8:00 to 10:30 p.m. at the Portland
Skate and Disco rink, 815 S.E. Main. Refreshments will be available, and a $25 prize
will be offered for the best couple in our Disco Dance contest. Tickets $2 at the door.
