Tears turned to smiles when Ira Mumford, extension agent, assured Taniki it won't take long before she'll be having fun with the other 4-H'ers, enjoying the 'fun in learning' projects, camp-outs and special events. fr MARTIAL ARTS — The popular martial arts classes this year distinguished themselves by winning awards at competitions in several Oregon events. SIXTH SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR URBAN 4-H PROGRAM 4-H is developing a program in the inner-city which continues to grow and to contribute to the welfare of young people. This is our goal and purpose. . . Through Urban 4-H, we are able to encourage and assist youngsters at an early age with the interests they choose to pursue. Special interest skill training is not a built-in educational procedure in most Portland schools, nor indeed in the nation. The effect of CHOOSING to learn, and enjoy the process, as is possible within the flexible 4-H program encourages young people to "come out" with their individuality and leads to self respect and respect for others. Although structured from within to provide organization and efficiency. The community has supported 4-H with it's enthusiasm and volun/eer leadership. We need your participation. Cultural 3uu - 3air More than 200 4-H enthusiasts attended the April 22nd Cultural Awareness Fun-Fair at Matt Dishman Center, sponsored by Urban 4-H. Highlighted by exhibits, foods, clothes and entertainment representing 20 countries from one end of the globe to the other, the program reflected what 4-H is doing in the inner-city and how it is bringing together, in understand ing and knowledge, the people of many ethnic ancj racial backgrounds living in the urban community. The program was spearheaded by 4-H senior staff member, Mrs. Betty Hardy, with the assistance of Joyce Payne and Myrna Holt. Among countries represented were Mexico, Africa, Asia, Japan, England, China, Australia, Norway, Argentina, Ireland, Scotland, Find- land, Germany and Austria. Special thanks is expressed to members of the Urban 4-H board of directors for their participation, under the leadership of Sue Carey. 4-H appreciation also is extended to mem bers of COSSPO, (Organization of Spanish Speaking People], to the Blue Penquin, and Import Plaza for exhibits displayed; British Imports, Knutson's Scandinavian Gifts, High land Community Center, foreign consulates and to United Way for financial support. Among dignitaries attending were Commis sioner Dan Mosee and Senator Bill McCoy. 4-H Chairman Betty Hardy reflected, "I could see the fair bringing the community together, and hopefully it will become an annual event sponsored by the urban 4-H program. FUN TO LEARN — Ms. Betty Hardy conducts a variety of 4-H classes in urban schools and clubs meeting in community homes. Ms. Hardy has been with the Urban 4-H Center since its inception in 1970, and has seen growth and development from a membership of 100 young sters to 2,700 in 1978. She is pictured conducting a self awareness class at Boise School, Northeast Portland.
