Statistics from the U.S. Census indi
cate that one out of every three homes
will be fixed up, built on, replaced or
remodeled within this year or next.
And, while many homeowners will seek
out the services of trade professionals,
others will do portions of the work and
sometimes even complete home improve
ment projects themselves.
Called "do-it-yourselfers”, this latter
group includes men, women and children.
They, and millions like them, represent a
swelling legion who spend billions each
year on decorative wallcoverings and
other structural building materials.
Primary cause for this family involve

ment project is needed. Then the family
confers about the various choices -
wallpaper, decorative wall paneling, car
pet or other floor covering, colors and
extras. To assist the potential do-it-your
self family in its quest for building
materials selections, retailers often carry
a complete package of products to com
plete any home improvement project.
There are prefinished natural wood
and vinyl-surfaced wood interior wall
panelings and moldings, gypsum wall-
board. plywood and lumber sidings for
interior or exterior use, and even colored
nails and adhesives for paneling applica

Helpfull “how-to” installation instruc

available from the wood and gypsum
products manufacturer and the dealers
they serve. They clue amateur family
members with tips to complete a home
improvement project with professional
looking results.
Choosing insolation contractors
If you're the average homeowner,
learning what to do when you have a
leaky pipe can save you many dollars in
damages to your home.
The first step is to shut off the water
supply to the break. Make it a rule to
know where the shutoff valves in your
house or apartment are located. Valves
are often under or near plumbing fix
tures. The hot water supply for the
entire house can generally be turned off
at the hot water heater. If necessary, cut
off all water in the house by closing the
main water valve.
A good do-it-yourself manual will usual
ly show you how to make emergency
repairs.
Emergency repairs can range from
taking temporary measures while wait
ing for the plumber, to making repairs
that will last for years. But even minor
leaks should be attended to promptly to
prevent further damage. Leaks tend to
enlarge over a period of time and
dripping water can damage plaster, stain
paint and wallpaper and create an electric
hazard. Knowing what to do can not only
save on repair bills, but on determining
how much your house is worth when
you're ready to sell it.
Want to insulate your home, but don't
have the time or know-how to do-it-your
self?
An insulation contractor may be the
best solution.
He's a trained professional who can do
the job right, and he may end up saving
you money in the long run.
There are hundreds of these profes
sionals nationwide; most can be found in
the Yellow Pages of your telephone
directory under “Insulation Contractors -
Cold & Heat.”
To help in choosing:
• Ask for references. A reputable
contractor will be happy to provide
them.
• If you are getting competitive bids,
describe the job's requirements exactly
the same way to each contractor. Other
wise, you'll have a hard time realistically
comparing the merits of each proposal.
• Ask each contractor whether he uses
“batt" or “loose-fill" insulation. Batts are
the familiar insulation "blankets" prefa
bricated by the manufacturer into uni
form thickness and density. Loose-fill
refers to finely chopped tufts of insula
tion, which are “blown" between attic
