PCC students share classes Jefferson classes
If some of the students at Jefferson
High School in north Portland appear to
be a little older than high school age. it’s
probably because they are not high school
students.
They are probably Portland Commu
nity College students attending Jefferson
High School as part of a unique exchange
program that allows PCC students to
take dance courses at Jefferson.
This spring term about 130 PCC
students are at Jefferson learning dance
side by side with the high school stu
dents.
Some attend classes in the
daytime hours and others in the evening.
Some earn college credit and the rest
simply go for fun. They rub shoulders
with the 100 high school students in the
dance classes and the more skilled PCC
students inspire the high schoolers to
perfect their own dancing skills simply by
their presence.
The model role PCC students play,
particularly the males, is crucial, accord
ing to Jefferson vice principal Shirley
Hakanson. “I don’t see how we would
have as strong a program as we do
without the PCC students," she said.
Jefferson's reputation for quality in
dance instruction is known throughout
the city and even extends beyond Port
land.
Several years ago, the Alvin
Nikolais Dance Company, a major Ameri
can dance group, spent three weeks at
Jefferson and reportedly left impressed
with the school's program.
With instructor Mary Folberg's expert
guidance, the Jefferson dance program
has introduced dance to more Portland
high school students than ever before.
The dance program is now one of the
major components of a performing arts
specialty, or magnet program, that Jef
ferson has developed to attract students
from throughout the city.
PCC students may take dance courses
at Jefferson at any level if there are
openings. There are PCC students in the
top dance company. The Jeffersons, and

presently make up over half of the
daytime enrollment and about 95 percent
of the evening enrollment. The courses
are offered through PCC’s community

Among the people who benefit from
the exchange agreement are Jefferson
High School graduates who are able to
continue their education in dance even
after graduation. Since it usually takes
more than four years to develop top
quality dance skills, the exchange is

BAY AREA - NIGHT AND DAY
I made an impromptu business trip to the Bay Area last week. Being an optimist. I
expected sunshine and warm nights during my brief stay. Unfortunately - not so.
Rain greeted me when I arrived and waved goodbye as 1 departed. Nevertheless. 1
had a pleasant stay and got a chance to stop in at a few of the old night spots and a few
of the new, to see what’s happening around the Bay Area.

When is a sandwich more than
just a sandwich? When it’s also
a salad! Simply toss ham strips,
lettuce, onion rings, and
KRAFT French Dressing. Place

IVEY'S • * •
If you were to ask me which club I frequent most in Oakland, my answer would be
simple - Ivey's. This Black-owned restaurant and lounge offers a progressive
clientele, good food and drink, beautiful decor, piano bar and a pleasant atmosphere.
Located in Jack London Square. Moderate.
SOLOMON GRUNDY’S • •
Located on the Berkeley Marina Solomon's offers a breathtaking view of the Golden
Gate Bridge and San Francisco. It's not as good as I once remembered, in terms of
food and service. Moderate.
THE MANSION • • •
I don't know the full story on this one, but I know you’ll like it. This $350,000 home
owned by a prominent Black attorney is turned into a disco party on two floors once
very two months by his daughter. Don’t worry all the beautiful Black people will be
there. Ask someone in the know about this one. Invitation.
THE LAMP POST • • •
I don't consider a trip to the Bay Area complete without stopping by the Lamp Post
for lunch or dinner. Excellent soul food and drink. Nice decor and atmosphere.
Moderate.

GRITT • • •
Gritt is probably the hottest singing group in the Bay Area. Melvin Jamison and I
have been good friends for a number of years now. I had a chance to catch them in
rehearsal. In all candor they were terrific!! To keep themselves from diluting the
quality of their voices, they insist on singing acapella. Other members of the group
include: Kenn.e Davis. Johnny Neal and Mitchell Dozier. Gritt is in the process of
putting together a western tour which will include Portland and Seattle. Here s
hoping the deal with Fantasy Records works out fellows - Good Luck!!

KRAFT Natural Colby has a mild
mellow flavor. Tastes great
on crackers, or with fruit.
Or by itself. Nutritious, too.
THE BIRD CAGE • • •
Good service, disco dancing and the hosts are as cordial as our own Paul Knauls
(owner of Geneva's!. You'll like this one. Moderate.
CHECK IT OUT1!
I'd like to thank the following people for making my visit a pleasant one.
Orr Jackson, Charles and Ronnie Scarbough, George Tribble, Donnie and Charles
Smith, James Simpleton, Kennie, Johnnie, Mitchell and Melvin Jamison of Gritt. I also
spotted a couple of Portlanders in Ivey’s - Lisa Westfield who s finishing up her
degree in advertising at San Jose State and Terry Rawlins who moved down in
November.
