stretch. Bluer guard Lionel Hollins,
seems always to rise to the occasion
The Portland Trailblazers 6"3" guard

Butts Sunday, by hitting a 44 foot jumper
with ao tune left or the clock to beat the
Butts 100-99. in Chicago Stadium
Hollins has emerged as the NBA s
finest at his position There are probably
-*ne guards that can do one thing better,
but nobody does the over-ail job that
Hollins does.
Hollins just might be the most valuable
ot all the Blazers. Maunce Lucas, as good
as he is can be replaced ably by IJovd
Neal. Dave Twardzik is hardly missed
» ben he leaves the game because Johnny
Davis does such a fine yob.
Jack Ramsey said in Fall Camp that
Hollins would log the most minutes at
guard. To date Hollins has appeared m 58
games and played a team leading 1980
minutes. Bill Walton is second with 57
games and 1916 minutes That averages
out for Hollins at 33.5 minutes per game.
Hollins, in his third year as a pro. is the
hub of the Blazer offense and defense
Nobody m the league is quicker getting
the ball up court on a fast break, you'll
a)ways see Hollins as the middle man and
be leads it better than anyone alive. On
defense be s always guarding the Ger
wins'. Thompsons'. Maraviches . etc. Hoi
hns has an uncanny court awareness and
seems always to make the pass off the
break.at the right tune.

Jefferson's Demos captured the PJ.L.
Championship Friday night 57 to 44.
Displaying tenacious defense and
great speed the Ilemos were able to
shake the pesky Techman in the final

Don Ransom, triggered the Demo attack
that ultimately led to victory.
This team was reminiscent of the T 2'
State Champion team. They showed
great poise and good teamw ork through
out the contest
Jefferson, ow e referred to as the
school of champions, has more than a
good chance to win it all this year.
Although beaten twice this year by
Number One rated Parkrase. I'm still not
convinced that the Demos aren't the best
team.
Officiating plays a large role in deter
mining the winner, which shouldn't be.
But all things being equal look for Jeff to
go all the wav.
I've followed P.I.L. basketball for years
and admittedly was very happy to see.
for the first time in years, a Black man
officiating an important game. But after
one quarter the cheers turned to tears.
Instead of being fair the officiating was
incompetent to say the least. When the
championship is on the line the officiating
should at least be adequate, and not
atrocious, as this was.
Bobby Ham s. Jefferson head coach

congratulated for turning the run and
gun Demos into a coordinated and robe
sive unit.
WOODEN RETURNS
The formation of a nationwide youth
basketball league under the direction of
the legendary former UCLA coach John
Wooden, was announced this week by
Tommy Curtis, captain of two UCLA
championship teams and league commis
sraner.
Under the auspices of The John Wood
en Youth Basketball League Inc., and
with cooperation of former <g>Uege bas
ketball players, the league anticipates it
will be established in fifteen slates the
first year far boys ana giHs between
eight and fourteen years of age.

Laker forward Jamaal Wilkes will have
his broken finger re-examined, if it is
healed he will be in uniform Friday night
at the Forum far the Lakers' game
against Denver. The news, released a
couple of days ago. maoe about as big a
splash as the John Roche acquisition in
1976, and the Ernie “D" Deal at 1977.

Wilkes, who reportedly earned more
than $300.000 a year, has become the odd
man out. He sits at the end of the bench
in street clothes and nobody seems to
notice or care.
Reporters have even stopped asking

Maybe it’s coincidence, maybe not but it
can't be overlooked - the Lakers started
their recent surge almost the moment the
little finger on Wilkes left hand snapped
That was January 11th. Three days
later, the Lakers lost to the Nuggets.
Then they ripped off thirteen wins in
sixteen games.
Not all were without Wilkes. He tested
his finger late last month and played
minor rales in four games, two of which
the Lakers lost

finger hadn't healed. West told him to go
home The Lakers didn't even bother
waving goodbye. 1'hey didnt have tune.
They were on their way to seven wins in
eight games.
No wonder Wilkes, according to a Bay
Area columnist, told former Warrior
teammates be wished be had stayed in
Oakland. He's tired of having his pnde
swept off the floor after every Laker
home game. Not even rich people enjoy
being useless.
Signed as a free agent during the
summer and the central figure in a heated
compensation conflict between the Lak
ers and Warriors. Wilkes was supposed
to be just what the Lakers needec along
side Kareem Abdul Jabbar on the front
line.
Nobody said he was a superstar, but
everybody said he was one of the most
complete players in basketball: he could
defend, pass, rebound and score. What's
more, be was known for being a winner
and smart, a combination over which
coaches drool.
Now some people say he is overrated,
that Rick Barry made him a better player
than he really is. But how can Rick
Barry, with his super ego. possibly think
of anyone other than himself. Maybe so,
but the Lakers may need and appreciate
him yet. especially if they happen to meet
Portland in the Play-offs Adnar. Dantley
can't stop Maunce Lucas and neither can
Don Frod. Wilkes may be the only hope.
