When jockey Eddie Arearo galloped across the
finish line astride Citation in tne 1948 Kentucky
IX-rhy, he broke a long-standing record set by Isaac
Ike” M urphy.
M urphy, a Negro, was one of racing’s all-time
greats and the first jockey to win the Churchill
Downs classic three times. The record stood for
57 years, until Arearo toppled it by winning his
fourth on Citation.

Famed explorer John C. Fremont surrounded
himself with able men on his expeditions to the
Far West. One of them was named K it Carson.
Another was Jacob Dodson.
Dodson jojned Fremont when he was 18 and
accompanied him on three expeditions into the
wilderness west of the Rockies.
