'Stardust’ presents Black History in song by Dorothy Alien play too loud at times. His trumpet solo was a magnificent, electrifying work of beauty. Memory's mastery of the trumpet had his fans holding on to every note. Sandra Love, playing the role of Ruby Johnson, a theatre scrubbing lady, open ed the viewers eyes to the happenings of stage life in the 1920’s. Ms. Love was very good as the old lady who reminisced about the early Black stage performers. And remembers the days when Blacks could only wax floors, and then graduated from minstrel to where we are today. lo v e 's portrayal of the cleaning lady, was generally enlightening and did much to bring the true meaning of what the “Stardust.” an exciting new musical opened Sunday. September 11. 1977 at Portland's Art Museum. “Stardust" is an anthology of Broadway musicials with an all-Black cast from minstrelsy to the "Wiz." The show opened with a loud, but entertaining rendition of “Freedom Jazz Song" played by Thara Memory. Mr. Memory, as a conductor, was simply suberb. He appeared to be on top of everything at all times. Memory’s playing was ideal for the setting. If he had one fault it would be a tendency to group was doing to the audience. “Stardust" is a must to see. It is a delightfully entertaining show, and has something for all ages. It is a fast paced, weli-put-together production. Rosemary Alien, the director, did a particularly inspirational monologue of "Graduation Night". Ms. Allen's smooth and melodious voice held a captive audience spellbound as she conveyed the happiness, and naughtiness of her long awaited graudation night. There were many beautiful, and well sung songs, but perhaps the show stop per was a tune so remorsefully done by Beverly Hodges, and the multi talented Roger Reid. This was a tune expounding on the inequities of the South in compari son to those of the North. Hodges and Reid as a duo were simply fantastic. Scenes from "Raisin.” "For Colored Girls." and "The Wiz" were dramatically sound. Star Productions is a professional group and it's evident that they're work ing extremely hard. The group as a whole is tremendously talented. Again "Stardust" is a must to see. “I've Gone to the Mountain,” a Martin Luther King presentation, will be performed in Octo her. Watch for the dates, and don’t miss it. Star Productions is a tribute to the community, and is worthy of your sup port. .. • elseuithe world. Having a classical background in his formative years. Shering later switched to jazz. After forming a jazz trio in the mid-40's, the George Shering Trio began to make quite a name for them selves in and around the New York area. When Shering wrote his classic "Lolly Bye of Bird Land," his fame spread throughout the world. Having been sightless since birth. Shering has not been faced with a lot of the problems sighted people have. In a recent television interview when asked whether being blind has been a handicap to him Shering contends that - having been blind all of his life, he doesn't have the prejudices that sighted people are faced with. Shering appeared for five days in the Mayfair Room at the Benson Hotel. When comparing the acoustics and seating arrangements in the various hotels, motor inns and etc.. I've always thought the Benson was a cut above the others. Shering and company came off just beautifully! I was seated up front, to the left of the stage, so my vantage point was excellent for witnessing one of the all-time greats in action. Shering is into something new singing. Out of the dozens of albums George Shering has recorded down through the years, his latest. "My Way” is the first album he's sung on. He's certainly not a Tony Bennett by no means, but his message is well received by all. There's not really much that I can say about Shering that hasn’t already been said over a thirty year career - other than the fact, that I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing him again!! and TV Networks and was the featured performer at the Centennial Celebration sponsored by the United States Embassy in Madrid. This will be her only concert while in the United States before returning to Spain. Allen Temple C.M.E.
