1 * i Sports Talk xvn Only two years < the Portland Trailblazers were bi criticized by Portland fans for n players Well now it itppears as if the Btaaers have finally seen the light. First of all they traded an all star forward. Sidney Wicks, and the Portland fan's beloved all star guard. Geoff Petrie. It was o b v » * that both players had to go for the Blazer*. to have any chance for a The! lasers had suffered the inept ball handling of W icks, and tbe inconsistent shooting of Petrie, but wbo would have hebeved both of them would be traded? Of course it was conceivable that W icks would be traded. Wicks bad been badgered by the Portland fans since his second year with the Blazers, when he didn't produce an instant winner. But W icks certainiy was not unjustly critieii ed by tbe fans. Tbe sloppy ball handling was not entirely his fault, since he was thrust, a 6 V . into a small forward spot usually occupied by 6'6" and S T for wards such as Bob Gross. I'm not saying Wicks deserved all of tbe criticism he got. but he did deserv e enough to be justifiab ly traded. Tbe Blazers also got rid of Petrie, which marks the character of a true championship team. Petrie's defensive ability was already sub-par, compared to other starting guards in the NBA. and Petrie would never have been able to play the pressure defense that the Blaz ers rode to the championship. But P ein e was an original Trailblazer and an over whelming favorite with the Portland fans. At the end of last season P etne just did not appear as a likely candidate to be traded. Tbe Blazers obviously realised that being sympathetic can stand in the way of being winners when they traded Petrie. Now that tbe Blazers are World Champions it’s apparent that they plan to remain champs. Their latest maneuver was to trade center. Robin Jones to Houston for what they believe » a better center. Coming from the European league and making the Biaaer dub as a free agent. Robin Jones won tbe hearts of many Portland fans. A lot M fans w en Robin Jones was traded, and rightly so. I a hack up center, hut the B ment felt that Jones-had not progressed enough over the course of the season to be a back up center to Bill Walton And Portland truety needs an adequate back up for Bill Walton, if they are going to continue to be a winner, when one considers the various ailments Walton The temperature reached over 100 degrees for three days in a row. unbe lievable. right? Well, that's not the only unbelievable thing characteristic of Ore gon. One of the state's most highly recruited football players did not start in last weekends Shrine All Star game. Robert Pickle" Lewis, the swift All State receiver from Grant High was relegated to third receiver behind Scott Tiesing of Sunset and Tack Paola of Sandy. According to North's coach. Jeff Dur ham of Forest Grove, the play of Lewis and Paola was extrem ely close during the practices. And. of course, what usually happens when a Black atheiete in Oregon plays with the same ability as white players happened. Paola got the starting nod over Lewis. This kind of discrimination doesn’t happen only in All-Star games, it happens everyday, in every sport. So next time you're watching a high school atl.eletie event and notice that the Black partici pants ability far exceeds the white player* abihty, you*11 know. If it didn't you would see a white player out there not a Black player.
