It appears that the Democrats in the Senate are
working hard to insure that a Republican governor is
elected in 1978
This Senate President Jason Boe and some of his
committee chairmen have effectively locked up
Governor Straub's legislation in committee- then
accused him of doing nothing to meet the state s
needs.
This would be expected for Senator Victor At'Y®h
and other Republicans who are eagerly waiting for a
chance to unseat Stroub. But it is not behavior that
should be expected from the Democratic leadership,
even if ’hey too ore seeking the governship.
Senator Boe has nearly complete control in the
Senate He could demonstrate his great talents and
concern for the people of Oregon by expediting the
legislation he controls—if he has those talents and
concerns.
h ,s unfortunate that one person holds so much
power Perhaps the terms of a Senator con serve as
Senate President should be limited, just as the terms
served by the Governor and other state officials are
limited.
When we Jason Boe's name on the ballot two
years hence, we must stop and wonder about his
accomplishments in the 1977 legislature.

h's true that the media has continuously tumped
on Young's statements and hove already labeled
him as a loose-talker, constantly putting his foot in
his mouth.
Some of Young's statements regarding racism and

racism's not a very diplomatic sub|ect.
Young's
reference to Britain's role in the slave trade and its

It is refreshing to have an ambassador who is
honest and outspoken, who is not afraid to speak out
ogainst injustice whether it is perpetuated by our

We have to wonder where this critical press was

M y hat b off to Andrew Young.
I t b interesting to listen and read the
c ritic is m d ire c te d a t A m bassad or
Andrew Young for speaking the tru th . I
have noticed prominent news media
personalities and journalists taking shots
at him for not following the traditional
lise as he relates to the racism and
oppression in Africa and elsewhere. I t b a
refreshing thing to hear someone in high
levels of government speak out and speak
boldly about what is happening on the
world scene.
It is tru e that South Africa is an illegal
government as it is constituted today.
Haw can one call it legal when less than
.tw enty percent of the inhabitants keep
tiore than eighty percent in slavery?
Certainly this is nor considered to be a
legal government in the Democratic
sense of the word.
Certainly M r. Young has the right to be
angry. A fte r all some of those people
may be his roots. W e know what slavery
is all about and it doesn't m atter how
much the politicians try to white wash
things, it still remains slavery. Hopefully
one of these days, the peopb of this
country will recognise this fact and
protest against this evil,
I personally like M r. Young's s ty b .
