1968 Olympics The boycott was success
ful in that it brought natioaal attention to
the racism practiced in athletics in the
United States and led to the expulsion of
medalists John Carlos and Tommy Skaith
from the Olympic Village
Edwards feels that the Rl—k common

Black athlete p artially because it «
of the few visible successes open to
Blacks. "N inety percent of the Black
elementary school boys have professional
sports as their goal," he explained. This
is not realistic since few men can be
successful in profesanmai sporta. “W e do
not see ninety percent of the w hite
students seeking a career in sports bu:
these unrealistic goals are held out to
Blacks.*

Sports
have been associated w ith manhood, so if
a young man is big and strong and does
not play basketball or football, he is
regarded as less than a man. There is no
room for the young person who is

He explained that so much energy is used
to excell in athletics that there is no time
for other things. Athletes tend to have
little knowledge of politics or other
important areas of hie. he said.
Edwards does not advocate giving up
sports, hut believes sports should he a

youth without insuring that they receive
an adequate education.
Edwards teaches sociology of sports at
the University of California at Berkeley,
and as a form er athlete has donated much
of his tim e studying the sociological and
political ramifications of sports.

dispute at Berkeley, where the admin»

the first speaker in a series sponsored by
the Black Studies Department and the
Black Cultural Affairs Board at Portland
State University.
