Portland Observer Optical exam takes time A kpu/ 30 per cent of Black Americana wear glasses or contact lenses today and many of them may be getting short changed on service. According to the American Optometric Association, most consumers are poor judges of vision care services and easy prey for persons offering quickie eye exams and poor quality eyewear in an effort to cash in on the multi million dollar eye care market. They thrive in metropolitan areas. To aid consumers, the association has put together a check list of what consti tutes a complete optometric examination. The association says the optometrist should: • Take from 90 to 60 minutes to examine the patients eyes on the first visit: • Record the patients health history before the examination begins. Allergies, diseases such as diabetes, and ailments such as high blood pressure can affect the results of vision tests. So can certain prescription and non prescription drugs that one might be taking. • Inspect the exterior of the eyes and lids for signs of eye disease; • Examine the interior of the eyes for signs of certain eye or systemic diseases. Since the eye is the only place in the human body where blood vessels can be seen in their natural state, symptoms of many diseases such as diabetes or hyper tension. can be spotted there first. If the optometrist detects such symptoms, he will refer the patient to another health care professional for further tests and treament. • Test visual acuity (ability to see sharply and clearly at near and far distances) and measure the refractive state of the eye (to determine nearsight edness and eye muscle function to be certain the eyes are working together as a team); • For those over 36, provide a tono meter test for glaucoma; • If the case history indicates a need, test color perception; depth perception; side vision; and other visual skills. The American Optometric Association advises the the optometrist, as part of professional responsibility, will explain any vision condition diagnosed and how the prescribed treatment, usually pre scription lenses or vision therapy, will help. Patients should feel free to ask about fees and the cost of glasses or contact lenses prescribed. Many optometrists use a fee for service system, charging patients laboratory ex penses for glasses and contact lenses. Most optometrists prefer to offer com plete vision service. Rather than provid ing a written prescription to be taken to an optician, they assist in the selection of a frame, order the glasses from the lab, check the prescription lenses when for warded by the lab, and adjust the glasses to the face. Those who prefer to take their pre scription to an optician, will be provided a written prescription. The American Optometric Association warns that patients should be suspicious of any vision examination that is hur riedly given or in which only a few tests are administered. Charles B.
