TED NOTOS
General* ready to march
by Ron Syken
The Grant Hi Generals, last year's
Cinderella team of the State tourney, will
open their 76 77 season December 1st,
against David Douglas from the always
tough metro league.
Hut who can forget Grant’s exciting
play in the past State meet? When the
pairings were made no one, but no one,
gave Grant a chance. After all. their first
round draw was Sunset, the #2 seed of
the tour icy. The Generals, however,
forgot to look at the ratings and went on
to destroy the Apollo* 66 53 . . . Coaches
and fans around the state were stunned.
The Generals were sparked by Junior
SXIurk Radford, who scored 39 pts.,
^Burniment high A W and pulled down
twelve rebounds against Sunset.
TOM JONES
When Grant took the floor the follow
ing night the MC crowd was buzzing. You
could feel the electricity in the air as the
cool Grant underdogs took the floor
against West Linn, a team that was 24-0
and the number one ranked team in the
State. West Linn's Lions just weren't
ready for what the Generals put on them.
Grant, playing the best ball of their lives
completely dominated the Lions finally
winning 74 53 . . . a big upset. 12,095 fans
showed up the next night to watch what
promised to be the game of the year.
Grant vs. North Eugene.
North Eugene opened quick and had
the game out of reach before the Generals
got untracked. Grant's Generals played
them even for three quarters, but even
tually lost to the eventual tourney
champs 70 60 Radford wowed the coli
seum crowd with his fantastic all around
play.
"I'm looking forward to this seasonf*
said Coach Tom Jones, "not only that, I'm
optimistic about it with the kids we have
returning.” Jones goes on to say, “The
improvement I've seen in Sophomore Gil
Flowers makes me truly excited about
the coming season." Flowers is the 6’6”
forward who played 10 games with the
varsity last year as a Freshman. With
seven returning lettermen. Grant will be
heavily favored to win the P.I.L. crown.
Grant's J.V. team had a fine season last
year posting a 16-1 league record and 17-3
overall.
But when asked if he expects any help
from the J.V. team, Jones replied, "Other
than Gil, I don’t see anybody getting
much playing time."
Jones figures the younger kids will
have a chance to adjust by watching the
veterans.
Coach Jones thinks that his back court
is as strong as any he’s ever had in his
entire coaching career, “Welton Jordan is
one of the better outside shooters I've
ever coached."
And that has got to mean something
because Tom Jones has certainly had
some
»me fine shooters at Washington
wasningion High.
nign.
Jerry Stilwell is a leader he comes off
.he bench, if he doesn t start, and he sees
the
situations, also has a court sense to
involve everybody in the action.” Jones
says it's also a possibility that All-State
forward Mark Radford will see some time
in the back court.
Grant will be stronger this year up
front with the moving of All League 6'6"
center Robbie Lewis from center to
forward. This will allow Grant to play,
6’6" Robert Kennewell and Flowers at
center.
Depth and heighth are the Generals
strong points.
Weaknesses . . . I can see none.
Jones has depth at guard in Jordan.
Stilwell, Larry Jackson and Kevin
McMillen.
Top four forwards would be Radford,
Ijewis, Ricky Gulledge and Clifford
White.
Coach Jones sees Benson, Jefferson,
Wilson, and Madison as his toughest
competition.
This looms as the year of the Generals
and Grant student body is ready and
