According to M r. Jensen the csptured
snake was about 3 to 4 years old and
could be w orth as much as 960 in a pet
store.
The brown and white snake w ill be
living much more comfortably in the
Portland Zoo. hopefully, to allow all poet
al employees involved to visit the “Crea­
ture” in a more pleasant environment. I f
any of you in the local area ever come
•cross a similar problem M r. Jensen ad­
vises calling the Portland Zoo at 226-1561.
As one cool postal employee retorted, at
least the situation was handled correctly
and proved to be a benefit to both snake
A n interesting event took place at the
Portland Poet Office on the morning of
June 23rd, 1976 aa mailhandlers Herman
Briggs and Clarence Burch were unload
ing parcels from an orange nylon pouch
originating from California. T o the a-
m .« .ment of both mailhandlers and near­
by postal employees a 3-foot live Califor­
nia K ing Snake emerged from the pouch
causing a “scattering" effect to the em
ployees working in the area.
Fortunately, the distinguished looking
reptile had no desire to seek companion
ship w ith any of the employees as he (or
she) quickly slithered for the nearest
hiding place.
Portland Zoo keeper Lee Jensen was
called in to the rescue providing expert
identification and safe capture of the
healthy L A M P R O P E L T IS G E T U L U S .
The California K ing Snake is non poison
i»ing predominantly in the South­
and employees.
Needless to say it is not everyday
where one can say that a 3-foot snake
“w riggled" into the hearts and minds of
the Portland Postal employees......

The Metropolitan Economic Development Corporation will
hold an Institute on urban and rural Economic Development,
July 14th-15th, at the Portland Hilton Hotel in Portland, Oregon.

The program will focus on the examination of practical issues
and elements of the urban and rural economic development
planning process, political process, financing process and
coordinating federal development programs. Registration will
be July 14th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with the institute to
get underway at 2:00 p.m. and closing on July 15th at 5:00 p.m.
The cost will be $100 with lodging, $75 without lodginq.
