Mononeodeosis folk Brigham decathoa chance
by Ron Sykes
•
Saturday. June I 9 l h the finest athletes
in the United Slates took the track for
the final day of decathlon competition.
The Olympic decathlon winner is gener
ally recognized as the finest athlete in the
world. I t is today
the culmination of all
those dreams, those long hours of train
ing, that it is all pul on the line. Unfortu
nately, Oregon’s Craig Brigham was put
on the line two months earlier. W hile at
the peak of his training program Craig
was hit with the strength sapping illness
called mononeudeosis.
Six weeks ago the lymph nodes in
Brigham's face were so swollen that the
very movement o f his eyeballs was pain
ful. Just four weeks ago he was dragging
and could barely make it to class.
Saturday he almost made it despite the
illness.
One event to go. the most gruelling of
all - the 1500 meters.
This is the rare that has shattered
many hopes and dreams.
“I was thinking I had to stay up with
Fred Samara." said Brigham of the man
who subsequently got the bronze.
“Fred went out fast, but so did 1. Too
fast, really, but that was okay because 1

was up with him.
"W ith two laps to go I passed Gough
and said to myself, now pull on Samara',
but it just wasn't there. M y brain said,
"Go" but the body couldn't respond."
Four years ago Brigham was a do-it-all
track man at South Eugene. And if my
hunch is correct, four years from now
Craig Brigham w ill represent the United
States in the Olympic Games.
Craig Brigham is 22 years old. This fall
he goes to Northw estern Medical School.
“I w ent through my undergraduate work
giving academics my first priority," he
said, "and I ’ll do the same in medical
school. I ’m predicting what I will do. I'd
like to continue competing, but I just
don't know w hat I'll do."

Timbers win at last!
The hand of Fate finally switched sides
and the Portland Tim bers beat the San
Jose Earthquakes I - 0 Saturday night at
the Stadium. Portland had loot tw o earli
er games to penalty kick«, but finally got
the referee on her side. N eil Rioch scored
for Portland a fter San Jose's John Row
lands was called for tripping inside the
penalty area.
The game contained only occasional
excitement. The Tim bers had several
shots on goal, but none came close to
going in. San Jose's offense was .neffec
five throughout the game, but Portland
goalie,Jim Cumbes bad to make tw o good
saves, tim b e r newcomers. Hank L iotart
and John Rogers played very well but
P o ta r t was obviously out of shape. He
had been used only sparingly by the
Seattle Sounders before being sold to
Portland. Jim m y K elly had another great
game, as did Paul Hendrie.
Besides Rioeh'a penalty kick the only
really exciting moment in the game came
w ith 1:40 le ft in the game. Seldom-used
Roger Goldingay headed the ball into the
net for w hat apparently was his first ever
N A S L goal. The crowd roared and the
Tim ber players gathered around Goldin
gay. But a fter deliberating w ith a lines
man, referee W erner Winsemman disal
lowed the goal, ruling Goldingay offside«.
The win ended Portland’« five game
losing streak, their longest ever.
M r. K ie k -It spends half his tim e leading
cheers and the other half being pelted
w ith litte r from the stands.
Portland plays Boston at the Stadium
on Wednesday and then has a rematch
w ith San Jose in California on Saturday.

Oregon runner
misses trials
by Roa Sykes
Robert C urry, a former Washington
High student and Oregon prep «print
champion of 1974 was among the specta
tors Saturday as the Olympic trials were
being held. A short two years ago on this
same Oregon track Curry captured both
the 100 and 220 in times of 9.6 and 21.7.
When asked how he liked running for the
University of Oregon he replied, “It's
really great to run here. These Eugene
fans are something else. They really turn
you on." Curry figures he had a good year
this year but ia adm ittedly looking for
ward to next season.
“The training nere is tough. There’s no
comparison between my training in high
school and w hat I do now. We start
working out in February and never stop."
Curry has gained three pounds since ma
triculating a t Oregon.
He feels that extensive work in the
weight room has made him stronger. All
through high school Curry felt the 100
was hia beat race, but after a couple of
years in Eugene the 200 has become his
favorite.
On thia beautiful day in Eugene Robert
Curry stood proudly in the middle of the
track and said, "You know, today I'm
here as a spectator but four years from
now I hope to be here (Olympic trials) as
a participant." I f hard work can do it then
Robert C urry w ill succeed.
