Seniors find ways to help
R.S.V.P. - That's what people put on
invitations; however, it is not what
comes to mind for 315 Portlanders 60
years of age or older. To them, R.S.V.P.
means Retired Senior Volunteer Pro
gram; a way to be an active part of
their community.
R.S.V.P. is funded through ACTION
(the Federal governmental agency con
cerned with volunteers) on a descending
scale. The first year of the grant the
Federal government paid 90% of the
program's operational costs - today, as
we enter our fourth year, the govern
ment pays 70% and the community
provides 30% of the operations costs.
The community costs are in-kind costs
from volunteer stations who provide
lunches or transportation for volunteers.
P resen tly in Portland/M ultnomah
County there are 55 non profit agencies
who need volunteers to perform essen
tial duties. Many of these agencies are
located in Northeast Portland; St. Vin
cent De Paul Day Care Center located
at 44 N.E. Morris is one of the pro
grams that can use volunteers. "The
center needs volunteers to read and
monitor the activities of 120 pre-school
age children," says Gerald Caldwell,
chairman of the pre-school’s advisory
committee.
The center operates five days a week
providing excellen t opportunities for
volunteers who like children to help
repair them for school.
If you are sixty years of age or older
and would be interested in serving as
an R.S.V.P. Volunteer at the center call:
R.S.V.P., 248-4752.
An interview appointment is all it
takes for you to get back into the swing
of community activity.
