Radical disappears
JE R U S A L E M
“King of the Jews",
and leader of a radical local sect, disap
peared Sunday from the tomb of Jose
phus where he had been placed after he
was officially executed on the cross at
Calvary last Friday.
Immediately following the discovery,
the office of Roman Governor Pontius
Pilate was contacted. A spokesman said
there was no comment to be made. King
Herod, who had agreed with the death
sentence, was not available for comment.
A high ranking Roman officer told the
press that the m atter would be tho
roughly investigated because a Roman
tribune was in charge of the military
detail responsible for guarding the tomb
site. Later King Herod's office issued a
written statement. It said the mystery
would soon be solved It also stated that
friends of Jesus of Nazareth had-cdlten
the body for hiding.

Reporters at the tomb site were be
sieged by the dead leader’s followers who
insisted Jesus had come back to life and
was removed from the grave by angels
from heaven.
It was the heavenly
visitors who rolled the one-ton stone
away, they claimed. Several of the
people, obviously happy about the disap
pearance, kept shouting, “He is risen."
The mystery which preceeded the
tomb incident was the strange and
sudden storm which struck the city
Friday immediately after the pronounced
death of Jesus of Nazareth. The dark
ness, and high winds, and the violent
character of the air drove most of the

spectators from the hill, including the
Roman soldiers.
Only the followers
remained throughout the storm.
The probable connection between the
storm and the disappearance of Jesus’
body has created upheaval in the Jewish
community generally and among his
followers specifically. Sources close to
both high commands in Jerusalem say
that both King Herod and Governor
Pilate are equally concerned and mysti
fied.
"The political overtones are ¡'fighter:
ing," an officer at the Temple said. He
asked his. name not be used. He said
Jesus' disappearance would strengthen
the movement of the dead leader anti
would attract thousands to the cause.
When Roman guards finally permitted
reporters into the tomb late Sunday
morning, they found assorted strips of
gauze wrappings, empty oil and incense
vials, and many smooth pats of dried wax.
The tunic, which Jesus was wearing
when he was brought into the tomb, was
nowhere to be seen.
The first break in the story came late
Sunday afternoon. Simon Peter a huge
fisherm an from G alile e, talke d w ith
newsmen. He had been arrested late
Thursday night near Gethsemane, a few
minutes after the Nazarene had been
taken into custody. He said Jesus had
preached of his own death and how he
would ascend to heaven and join his
father. Simon Peter, he was given the
iast name by Jesus, said the carpenter
from Nazareth would return to earth. He
did not give a specific time or date.
