were 600 plus supporters of popular Commissioner Charles Jordan's on hand to show
their support to him in the up and coming elections. The "crust" of the Albina
communities were on hand for the affair - in strength.
The very talented Bill Hemman Trio provided the easy to listen to sound for the
occasion. Along with Hemmans on saxophone, were Count Dutch on organ and Dale
Smith on drums. The Bill Hemmans Trio was reviewed in our March 4th edition and
received our highest rating. Need I say more?

Les McCann truly feels his music and
plays with an exceptional taste and
innovation. He is one of today's finest
performers in the jazz idiom, and his
performance in the atmosphere of the
Paramount Cabaret should make for a
musical treat.

Never have I had so much empathy for a social function as I did for the deplorable
turnout for this affair. There were more people in the show than in the audience But
nevertheless, the show went on. and on it did. The collection of young doers and
hopefuls was most impressive!
There were poetry recitals from Sandra Love, who also modeled and shared the

Bobby Fouther, who designed quite a few of the outfits being worn, is to be
commended for his efforts. The fabrics, colors, designs and models who wore them
were tastefully selected. Mr. Fouther has the imagination and talents to dress any

The "Portland Black Repertoire Company”, featuring the multi talented Charles
Tatum on drums, were nothing short of sensational. Lovely Sharon Crockett formed
the company less than a year ago. but they've come a long way since then and their
performance shows it Other members of the company are: Elaine Simms, Caroline
Davis. Barbara Pittman and Sandra Love. Michael D from radio station KQIV
provided the disco sounds for the remainder of the evening.
According to Clarence Woods, Albina Art Center Director, and Jea Crews,
organizers of the affair, ticket sales were poor and promotion should have been
intensified a month before the show, to increase sales. Despite the poor attendance
Mr. Woods feels that he knows his mistakes on this show and will avoid those same
mistakes next time. It is up to us to support the Albina Art Center in its endeavors as
responsible citizens of the community. Other communities support their culture
awareness programs and institutions, and we should certainly support ours either
financially or physically, without hesitation.
