Jeff band seeks trophies
Concordia enters area tourney

A ssociation (N L C A A ) P acific N o rth w est
R egional T ournam ent. The tournam ent
c o n sists of six team s w ith Concordia
paired a gain st E u gen e Bible on Thurs
day, F eb ru ary 26th at M ultnom ah School
of Bible. T he w inn er of th e tournam ent
plus N o r th w est C hristian C ollege (league
w inner) advan ce to th e N L C A A W est
C oast C ham pionships to be held at
M ultnom ah School of th e B ible on March
Sth and 6th.
The W est C oast T ournam ent will
involve four team s: th e top tw o NLC A A
clubs from California, N o r th w est Chris
tian C ollege and th e w inn er of th e Pacific
E veryon e is probably fam iliar w ith
m arching bands in th e P ortland High
Schools. H ow ever, th ere are o th e r high
school bands.
Je ffe r so n has sta r ted its ow n band w ith
stu d e n ts from th e M agnet P rogram
and th o se w ho p articipate in the
m arching band.
Concordia has been selected by the
P acific N o rth w est C ollege C onference to
rep re se n t them in the N LC A A N ational
tournam ent. The tourney w ill be held
March 8th 12th in Norfolk. N ebraska.
The C avaliers wilt play the rep re se n ta ­
tiv e from th e T exas-O klahom a d istrict in
op en in g round action. Team m em b ers
are involved in various fund raising
projects to m ake th e trip possible.
Korfbail team visits Eugene
A national d elegation of a th le te s from
the N eth erlan d s will visit E u g en e and the
U n iv ersity o f O regon to conduct a se r ie s
of "korfbaH” d em on stration s M arch 30th
and 31st.
“Korfbail" is a sp ort o f D utch origin
much like basketball. It is played with
team s of e ig h t, four m en and four w om en.
The object of th e gam e, which is divided
into tw o 30-m inute halves, is to ou tscore
th e opp osition by sh ootin g a soccor ball
into a fifteen-inch d iam eter b ask et that's
m ounted atop a 11 'h foot standard.
T he basket has no backboard and there
are no tim eo u ts in th e gam e. G oals can
only be scored from a non-guarded
position and guardin g a player of the
op p osite se x is not allow ed . A ll d e fe n se is
one-on-one.

P hysical E ducation and R ecreation con

will include app earances at Sp en cer
B u tte Junior H igh School and Sheldon
H igh School on T u esd ay, March 30th, and

day, March 31st.

stration s, including confirm ed tim es and
accom odations for public participation,

A d ults, is one of th e se r ie s of e v e n ts that
precede the M am moth Tea, held at Allen
T em ple Church annually. Each y ea r the
show grow s bigger and b etter. T his year
not only will one have the opp ortu nity to
view th e latest fashions of ail a g e groups,
but th ere will be special g u e st m odels and
g u e st a rtists. T he g u e st m odels will be:
Mrs. A n ise Hall, Ms. S u e Childs and Ms.
Joyfle Taylor. G uest a rtist will be the
J efferso n High School Choral and D ance
Group.

perform ed w ith such w ell know n musi

brings w ith him a g r ea t e x p e rien ce in the
field of in stru m en tal m usic to the
Je ffe r so n staff. H is in te r e sts in jazz, and
all form s of m usic have g iv en the
J e ffe r so n stu d e n ts ren ew ed e x citem e n t
in th e se perform ing in stru m en tal groups.
T he band e n te re d com p etition , per
form ing at H udson Bay H igh School in
V ancouver, W ash in gton. P len ty of talen t
w as e x p r e sse d by Vernon Johnson,
saxop hon e soloist; Kirk G reen, piano
soloist; D e e W iggin s, drum soloist; and
Lori J o sep h jazz vocalist.
T h ese four
people cam e bark to J efferso n sh ow in g
th e c er tific a tes th ey w ere aw arded for
such an im p r essiv e job.
Ixiri J o sep h w as stu n n ed w h en she
realized that sh e had received such
recognition , sin ce th ere w e re no other
vocal so lo ists com petin g.
A lthou gh four people w e re given
cer tific a tes, th e band as a w hole also did a
splendid job w ith tw o stan d in g ovations.
7:00 p.m . T ick ets may be purchased at
th e door.
T he second show w ill be a concert the
sam e night at 10:00 p.m . T ick ets will be
$2 at th e door. Both a c tiv ities will be held
in th e Jefferson H igh School C afeteria,
located at 5210 N. Kirby St.
P roceed s w ill help the band's e x p e n se s
tow ards their trip to Reno, N evada
during sp ring break.
T hey will be
en te rin g com petition with 150 other
bands. This trip w ill last during m ost of
th e sh ort vacation.

th e fin est basketball players in th e S ta te and w orthy of A ll S ta te recognition. If

en slaved com m unity w as one to be found
only in m eeting; th at is, in th e m idst of
life ex p erien ces.
T his is precisely - and sign ifican tly -
the w ay th e God of the patriarchs and
prophets and of th e a p o stles (in th e Old
and N ew T esta m en ts) w as known. Jacob
w restled w ith God; Ezekiel found God's
sp irit in a w heel; Isaiah m et God at an
alter; Mary and J osep h m e t God in a
stable; and Paul m et God on the
D am ascu s Road. T he Black sp irituals
reflected th e fact th at th e God of their
ex p erien ce w as not one w ho w as afar off
and w ho b lessed "th in gs as th ey are" - or
which at least seem ed for th e tim e to be.
