Bethel A.M.E. Church has been
awarded a grant by the Oregon Bicen­
tennial Committee to publish a book
consisting of the stories of Black people
who lived in Oregon during the early
years and to build an oral library of tape
recordings of the memories of older
residents.
Blacks have been an integral part of
Oregon history, having been among the
early explorers and the early settlers and
have contributed to every state of the
area development.
The history of Blacks in Oregon has
been one of exclusion from the social,
political, economic and educational life of
the community. First the exclusion was
through law and then through custom.
No history has yet been written on the
contribution of Blacks in Oregon. The
Oregon Black History Project will be the
first step toward that goal.
