o f your newspaper fo r i t s In v a lu a b le c o n trib u tio n to th e people
of the C ity o f P o rtla n d , and as a m a tte r o f f a c t , the freedom of
the press throughout the w orld.
I have not always agreed w ith your p o s itio n s on a l l issues; however,
I admire you fo r th e bold and courageous manner in which you defend
your c o n v ic tio n s . Even under severe c r it ic is m and sometimes economic
pressures, you have nonetheless stood your ground and made d e c is iv e
decision s as you saw f i t .
Your paper, in my v iew . Is w ell la id out 1n format and f u l l of
p e r tin e n t and concise in fo rm a tio n . To me, t h is is an in d ic a tio n
o f conscientious e f f o r t by your s t a f f .

I t is extrem ely d i f f i c u l t to be in business tod ay, much more a
newspaper business, which in i t s e l f is a forum fo r c r it ic is m .
The Observer has survived fo r f iv e long years and s t i l l remains
f o r c e f u l, v ib r a n t and a p p a re n tly v ia b le .
I t can only r e f l e c t the
s tre n g th , im a g in atio n , in t e g r it y and courage o f the man a t the top.
