A young Ghanaian boy learns to play the drum , most often by m aking his own drum and then understudying elders in the village. The drum accompanies dancers but it is also a means of communication, its tone conveying the drummer's meaning. Ghana holds Art Festival Ghana's governm ent is proceeding w ith its own National Festival o f A rts despite postponement of the second W orld Black and A frican F estival of A rts and C u lture which had been scheduled fo r Novem ber in Lagos. Nigeria. Instead of selecting perform ers to represent Ghana at the Lagos festival, the A rts Council has decided to trans form thp national finals into a national event in Accra from October 21st to Novem ber 6th Performances w ill include tra d itio n a l Ghanaian drum music, tra d itio n a l dance groups, brass band music, contem porary lite ra tu re readings, contem porary and tra d itio n a l drama, and classical and contem porary choral music. A rts and crafts w ill be on display and a Ghanaian crafts village w ill be open to visitors.
