Hospitals centralize
The boards of directors of
four metropolitan area hos
pitals announced that they
have centralized their man
agement.
Emanuel. Physi

a management agreement
with Metropolitan Hospitals.
Inc.
M e tro p o lita n H ospitals,
Inc., was originally conceived
in 1970 by Emanuel and
Physicians and Surgeons
hospitals for the construction
of Meridian Park Hospital.
The organization was later
expanded to include Gresham
Community Hospital when
that institution was pur
chased by Metropolitan Hos
pitals.
The
basic purpose of
Metropolitan is to provide
centralized general planning,
financial planning and man
agement services for each of
the member hospitals." C.
Harold Weston, chairman of
the Metropolitan Hospitals
Board said.
T h e r e are certain func
tions which lend themselves

said.
T h e s e functions will
be centralized - the first of
which will be the accounting
functions of each hospital."
Under the terms of the
contract agreement, each of
the four hospitals will con
tinue to operate virtually as
autonomous units, meeting
the unique needs of their
communities.
Emanuel Hospital Presi
dent Roger G. Larson has
been appointed the chief
executive officer of Metro
politan Hospitals, Inc.
He
will be spending one half of
bis time with Metropolitan
and the other one-half in the
planning of construction and
fund-raising for Emanuel's
buildings and programs.
W alter L. Behn has been
appointed administrator for
Emanuel Hospital.
T h ro u g h Metro, the four
participating hospitals hope
to provide quality care to the
citizens of the metropolitan
area in a manner which
displays a central and organ
ized management structure
and provides cost saving to
the public in the rendering of
hospital services," said A l
fred C. Hutchinson, M .D.,
president of the Physicians
and Surgeons Hospital Board
of Trustees.
