TEEN SAFETY
Suddenly your teenager
wants to learn to drive. What
should you do’ As a parent
you want your child to be
come a good driver, always
safety conscious-so your first
step is to see that he or she
is taught properly.
Even if you are an excel
lent driver, you should not
be the instructor.
The odds are too great
that you will
pass on your
bad habits as
well as your
good ones to
the beginner.
If
your
c h ild is en
rolled in a driver education
program, wait until he has
participated in several ses
sions before you go out on
lltc* road with him. You can
give your teenager supplemen
tal practice behind the wheel
Have the car in top working
order. Your first trip should
be short, not excetiding half
an hour. Plan ahead, and have
a definite route in mind.
Be patient. Remember your
youngster is nervous, too.
Resist changing any driv
ing method taught your child
at school. If you disagree,
you can always talk to the
instructor.
Act as a lookout for the
driver, pointing out poten
tial tie-ups or nazards-but
don't nag.
As the driver becomes
more accustomed to your
presence and the car, sched
ule a variety o f driving situa
tions, including freeway driv-
*ng, one-way streets, shopping

I f you saw “ Live and Let

the radio and you may hear
his melodious dark voice
persuading you to fly to
the Caribbean. On televi

back chair and dramatical
ly executes an award-win
ning commercial Geoffrey
Holder is a man of many
talents. He also cares about
people, being one o f many-
Black artists who recently-
participated in a benefit
concert to raise funds for
drought-stricken West A fri

■ to read Geoffrey Holder's
Caribbean Cookbook” (Vik
lng $6.95). The recipes are
both simple and exotic and
written with touches of
humor and love. The au
thor's fantastic sketches and
paintings (and photographs
of his parents) offer an in
sight into the Caribbean way
of life. Beautiful!
This recipe for Broiled
Kabobs was adapted from
the book. It consistsof meat-
balls seasoned with spices
and herbs and served with
tomato, onion and lime.
As an inventive Caribbean
cook myself. I couldn't re
sist broiling the tomato and
onion slices along with the
meatballs. To add moist nt-v-
