Senator Vern Cook has served the people of Oregon in the Legislature since 1957, first as a two
term member of the House of Representatives and then as a 14 year veteran of the Oregon Senate.
Senator Vern Cook began his legislature career as a member of the House Taxation Committee. He
has become an acknowledged expert in the field of Taxation and School Finance. In 1971 and 1973
he was chairman of the Taxation Revenue Committees Senator Cook lead the 1969 fight against
the Sales Tax, defeating it by 8 to 1 and in 1973 lead the battle against the governor's Tax program
defeating it by 6 to 4
At the 1973 Session Vern |oined with the supporters of the governor's tax plan and brought about
the enlargement and liberalization of the Property Tax Relief Plan For Homeowners and Renters, a
plan which he initiated at the 1971 session. As Co-Chairman of the Conference Committee that
prepared that plan he also lead the support of the two School Finance measures which will be on
the May 28 hallot.
Senator Vern Cook Co sponsored the package of Fish bills introduced at the 1973 session,
including the bill to close the Columbia River to commercial fishing from Feb. 1 to June 1. He
obtained passage of legislation requiring the Fish Commission to consider the interests of the
sports fishermen as well as the commercial fishermen. Vern is a sponsor of the SteelTiead Initiative
now being circulated.
Senator Vern Cook is an effective legislator who knows how to work with lawmakers of both
parties.
