Consumer pleas rise Complaints received by the Multnomah County District Attorney's Consumer Pro tection Department have in creased 20 percent thia year. District Attorney H arl Haas said recently. An e v alu atio n re ve aled during the first six months of 1973, the department re ceived 560 complaints having to do with consumer prob lems and alleged violations of consum er p ro tectio n laws, laist year the office received complaints totaling 371. Haas said. of theft and odometer tarn pering. All were convicted and received jail sentences. Haas said. “Our office will continue to recommend jail time for ail ronvicted defendants in these rases." Haas said. “In my opinion, and in the opinion of law enforce ment officials, a jail sentence is the best deterrent. A fine is not a strong enough sen tence." Since formation of the de partment. 13 persona have been fined a total of $27.(33) About $5,630 has been col lected, Haas said. Fines have ranged from $1,000 to $10,000. The District Attorney said rolling bark an odometer hikes the sales price of the vehicle an average of $500 Created in 1972, the de partment is charged with enforcing consumer re la te d statutes and assisting con sumers. A deputy district attorney and two investi gators staff the office. Haas said the majority of complaints involve automobile repair and sales, home im provement, spas and dance studios, applicance sales and service, magazines and mail order businesses. During the first half of the year, consumer protection in vestigators spent a substa.i tial part of their time follow ing up complaints having to do with odometer tampering. Odometers record mileage of motor vehicles. Three persons have been indicted this year on charges The District Attorney's of fire also took action against seven firms this year re sulting in assurances of vol untary compliance. An as surance of voluntary com pliance means a firm agrees not to commit certain prar tires violating consumer sta tutes. Such agreements do not indicate a firm has ad mitted to or been convicted of w rong doing: how ever, violation of an agreement ran result in a court assessed fine as high as $25.(331 ■Prices good W ednesday, October 3, thru Saturday, October 6* Compare And Save at Doxsee New England Style Betty Crocker Tuna Helper Clam Chowder lee.
