opens drop-in center
The Door, a drop in center
for ex-prisoner», drug addicts
and people with emotional
problems, will hold an Open
House on Sunday, September
23, 1973, from 3:00 p.m. to
6:00 p.m.
The purpose of the Center
is to provide a place where
these people can meet with
each other as well as become
involved with people who can
assist them in finding a
better way of life.
The Center will provide
re fre s h m e n ts , frien d lin ess ,
discussion groups, vocational
and housing assistance, and
Bible study. Also, there will
be games, places to sit,
books to read and music.
The sponsoring groups are
the Christian people and
churches in the surrounding
area who are convinced that
they have an obligation to
provide supportative asais
lance to those who have
fallen victim to the various
vices of society and seek to
be free.
The center will not serve
as a “hang out". Instead it
will be geared to those seek
ing a better way of life, and
especially to those who made
Christian commitments while
in prison and need the fellow
ship and support of Christian
people.
There is a need for volun
teers who will serve as
hosts, hostesses, and super
visors.
Churches are en
couraged to send in the
names of groups who would
like to serve in the afternoon
nr evening. Groups such us
missions circles, b ro th e r
hoods, ushers, and adult
groups.
There are several
afternoon and evening slots
that need to be filled.
The center will operate on
donations from those who
see the need for this minis
try. Your share of $5.1HI or
$10.00 a month for one year
will help.

Prayer
overcomes
prejudice
Racial prejudice and other
ills can be overcome through
effective prayer, A lb ert B.
Crichlow, C.S., said in Port
land.
A Christian Science lec
tu rer and practitioner from
Petit Valley, Trinidad, M r.
Crichlow is the first Black to
serve as a member of The
Christian Science Board of
Lectureship.
M r. Crichlow spoke at the
in v ita tio n of the E ig h th
Church of Christ, Scientist.
“Prayer Power" was the title
of his lecture.
E v e ry hum an h e a rt ia
yearning for what only gen
uine prayer ran bring, M r.
Crichlow said.
"The first requirement of
e ffe c tiv e p ra y e r ,” he de
dared, “is that we arknow
ledge our ever present con
nection, our continuing re
lationship, with inexhaustible
good, God."
Christ Jesus showed how
to experience "prayer power"
at all times.
The prayers of Jesus were
effective," he explained, “be
cause he expressed the
Christ.
The Christ spirit
governed him.
And so his
thinking was always God
oriented 4nd good motivated.
Jesus understood that what
consciousness entertains, that
is, what you think and feel,
and what you admit from the
world's thinking about you
externalizes itself in your
body and experience."
He held that the healing
power of prayer is available
to everyone. "Jesus healed."
he said, "not by treating the
externals, but by establishing
every man's Christliness in
his thought.
His way of
u tiliz in g p ra y e r m ay be
likened to what we do when
we're unhappy with a picture
on the television set.
We
don't change the picture on
the television set by trying
to clean it off, or re-color it,
or anything like that.
We
simply replace the picture by
changing the channel.
We
make a connection with an
other source.
"In like manner, Jesus had
become a master of changing
the image on the screen of
consciousness. He knew how
to blot out the tragic, heart
rending pictures that paraded
before his eyes, and in their
stead unveil the wholesome,
spiritual realities of being.”
He added, “As surely as
did Jesus, we can know the
Christ as a source of prayer
power and find our prayers
effective. W e can experience
God as a very present help
in trouble."
